Although I don't recall seeing this question specifically raised in any of the threads I've skimmed, several people asked me about it at one point or another on my Storm from the Shadows signing tour. How much does the Maya Sector's military capability improve between Crown of Slaves and Storm from the Shadows or Mission of Honor? The answer is that Roszak and Barregos are able to make significant improvements (in no small part because of their new relationship with Erewhon). They are not, by any stretch of the imagination, up to the standards of Manticore or Haven by the time Roszak runs into some ex-SS mercenaries now in the employ of a certain clandestine conspiracy dedicated to Overthrowing the Galaxy As We Know It, but they're a heck of a lot better than anyone outside Maya or Erewhon suspects. (And by "anyone," I am specifically including both Manticore and Haven, although they aren't anywhere near as far in the dark about all of this than Barregos' nominal superiors in Frontier Security.)
