Try DevintART, http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&global=1&q=Honor+Harrington as a source for art, or cut from cover illustrtions. I think this art by Zenzmurfy would make a good treecat avatar:

How to make an avatar from art:

When I saw this line art on DeviantART that would make a good icon for for my friend spacekiwi:

Cute hugh? Now for Image the icon.

OK how to go from the art to the icon. Most sites use 50x50 pixel icon so that's your size.

How much to reduce art simple (((50 pixels) / (size of original art in pixels)) x 100) = percent reduction. Note do any cropping before reducing.

To letter leave a ten pixel space per line, single dot pixels are seven pixels high and average four pixels wide.

I use MS paint.
