Oh the fun they will have as Ally 'modernises' her..... =D :P

How would a fictional character modernise the author's better half?

Sharon is a Goddess and thus is eternal and perfect. It is She who would 'modernize' Allison. :-)

I am sure RFC agrees with this opinion :-)

I know that Adm Hemphill gets credit for the tech advances. Is there any reference that she is herself a great innovater/theorist/visionary, or is she the the one who runs the organisation that gathers those innovaters, theorists and visionaries, gives them the tools and keeps them on track?

House of Steel elaborates on her early years and is quite revealing about her early challenges.

Thank you Duckk.
Having read that I am convinced that having Sonja and Shannon as co-heads would be a disaster. Sonja doesn't play well with others. Making Shannon subordinate to Sonya would be insulting to Shannon, and a threat to Sonja. Nope, move Shannon back to a combat command, or maybe have her working on how to intergrate existing Havanite and Mantie forces in combat. In a couple of years Sonya will have cemented her control of Bolthole and Shannon can be rotated back as Sonya's deputy in charge of figuring out tactics for the new stuff.

I think I have a different take on this potential relationship. Basically you have one person, Shannon, that is extremely good at "extrapolating tactical applications of technological advances". And another person, Sonja, that is extremely good at "driving through those technological advances". It seems to me that this is actually a good match. I can see Shannon playing devils advocate to Sonja. She will be able to push Sonja in ways that Sonja can not push herself. A new technology comes to Shannon and she will either see how to implement that tech, or realize it is worthless, or see fundamental flaws or short comings and press Sonja on those. No I see this as two parts of a puzzle that work extremely well together.

My pessimistic outlook might be influenced by a previous experience involving similar personalities that did not end well. On the other hand, maybe that was an exception. On the gripping hand, only RFC know for sure. (P.S. Even when I totally disagree, I am impressed by the thought posters here put into there ideas, and the willingness to listen and consider other's ideas.)

She didn't play well with others twenty years ago. But she couldn't have accomplished what she has since then (including a reasonably successful stint as wartime fleet commander, but especially what she's done as head of BuWeaps) without getting a lot better at that.

For me, the moment where Sonja apologised to Honor for her having had to take Fearless into combat sold me on her being a professional able to work with others rather than a cartoon villain (which is all that was shown of her in OBS).

Hemphill's skills and interests complement Shannon's, with one throwing out ideas and the other fleshing them out, so, given Sonja knows she needs someone to translate her ideas into sound tactical doctrine, I see her being okay as a partnership with Shannon - particularly since Shannon is still enough of a techno-nerd to shrug off any impoliteness in pursuit of their common goals.
