More seriously the actual effects on politics/religions would vary considerably depending on the aliens.

1. Do they come in peace or do they attack on sight?
2. Do they try to manipulate human politicians?
3. What do they want? Trade? Locate a star base on the moon? Eliminate the human race and start their own colony on our planet?
4. What is the aliens religion? Is is similar to Christianity?
5. Are they more or less aggressive than humans?
6. Do they learn faster or slower than humanity?
7. Do they want to share their space traveling technology or do they want to keep humans to one planet?
8. Do they want to interact with humanity as a whole or just through designated spokesmen?
9. Which of humanity's languages do they speak? All of them? Some of them? Are they willing to teach humans their language?

Good questions, but I doubt that they would have any religion if they are smart enough to do interstellar travel.

What about worshiping science and discovery? for is not science like a relgion, only with a discovery mindset as opposed to a dogmatic mindset? With a lab as an altar, and a science journal as the holy book, with a council of scientists updating the book, and the first commandment to be: discover the truth. thats a reigion i could get behind.
