Gentlemen, please. Your above posts lack the elegant cruelty of those capable of truly evil thoughts.

My idea is simple. They Group of Four have become used to their wealth and political power. They have become corrupt and tainted in their belief that they know God's will. They are at the apex of power.

Bring them down!

If they are captured, then don't put them on trial. Reduce them to the rank of Novice, and force them to study under the Brotherhood, the Church members who know the real truth. Force them to take vows of poverty, give them sack-cloth robes to replace their fine fabrics, let their meals be gruel or bread and water rather than their finest feasts. Place them in isolation for half of each day and supervised for the rest, to prevent them from taking numerous mistresses. Force them to devote their lives to God and, when their wills are broken and they have finally realised that they will never regain their lost power... tell them the truth about the Church of God Awaiting and its so-called Angels, using the Stone of Schueller to reinforce the impact. Then exile them, together, to a small island, so that they can "meditate" peacefully, without outside interference.

There is nothing so cruel as giving someone everything, then taking it away.

Awaiting comments.

I don't care what you folks do to the others, but here's my punishment for Duchairn.

Give him the thankless job of cleaning up the mess within the Safehold Church.

Make him give Merlin annual reports on how its coming.

If he starts 'slacking off', then you can have him. [Wink]

Why do you want Duchairn so bad?

Not exactly. I am English, and we are past masters of pragmatism in all of its forms. Killing them would be a waste of resources and would not be enough to dissuade others from following their footsteps.

Remember, punishment properly applied serves two purposes.
1) It tells the recipient that they have transgressed the societal mores and makes it clear that they should not do so again.
2) It provides an example to others as to why they should not breach the societal mores, thus reinforcing the stability of society as a whole.
It is if people lose sight of those two aspects that problems start. At the risk of sounding like a ranter, misplaced liberalism (note the word misplaced) is one of the more toxic threats to an orderly society, almost as bad as rampant corruption. Anyone who insists that prison doesn't work has chosen to ignore the fact that robbers cannot rob in jail and most other crimes are also hard to achieve. An example is always important.

I'm not evil, I'm merely a total pragmatist.

First, I was only joking and second you make good points on the purpose of punishment. I will tell you what I think Merlin will actually do if he got to chose. He would either kill them or do something similar to what you had in mind.

Well, he's the one member of the group of four who is becoming a true man of God.

He deserves the opportunity to actually try to fix the mess within the Safehold Church.

Zhaspahr Clyntahn should be executed. I am almost always opposed to the death penalty for reasons too numerous (and too off-topic here) to discuss presently. Clyntahn is one of the few exceptions I would make to my general opposition to the death penalty. No torture prior to exile, but a clear, firm, PUBLIC execution of the man.

As for the others, I agree with Drak that Rhobair Duchairn should be given the opportunity to clean up the mess he made. Trynair and Magwair should be sent into permanent, impoverished exile, far away from any and all civilization. I recommend exile to Armageddon Reef.

I see that you are all business with the group of four.
