Just a quick question here.

Has the Doctor Mahklyn published the Theroy of Gravity yet? I dont remember any textev that he has. And if he hasnt any guesses on why he wouldnt have yet.

Who knows how much of that he'll publish soon. I just started OAR again and it mentions that the Book of Hastings attributes gravity to divine power.'

Off Armageddon Reef wrote:And the maps of The Book of Hastings, which conclusively demonstrated that their world was a sphere, also explicitly taught Safeholdians the Ptolemaic theory of the universe … and turned gravity itself into yet another of the Archangel Langhorne’s miraculous gifts to man, through God’s grace. Indeed, Langhorne had created the world as a round ball at the center of the crystal spheres of the moon, sun, stars, and God’s own Heaven expressly as a means to demonstrate to Man that God could accomplish anything He willed. After all, did it not require an act of divine will and power to keep people from falling off the bottom side of the world and crashing into the moon?

We had an extensive discussion on what information Merlin handed over and how that would be used, and when it disproves the Ptolemaic model of the universe as set forth in the Writ, what would the effect be?

Hi Donnachaidh

Even if the rules for using gravity ARE published, it would just be a way of calculating the effect of this particular divine power.

Nothing against the Writ there is there ??

The power is still divine in nature, we'd just have discovered a way of better understanding its EFFECTS - - we'd still not know anything about its NATURE - - - right ??

Very good point, kbus... I can see this response from Clyntahn upon seeing such a book published - "Gravity works that way because that's what the way God and the Archangels wanted it to work - and Doctor Mahklyn's investigations into this matter is a crime against with Will of God!!"

The funny thing is that we're about at that point now. We can model and predict gravity pretty well but we don't know how or why it works.

Yeah, they're still trying to discover the elusive graviton. I don't think they've determined the speed of gravity, either (instant over all ranges, speed of light, or something else). Basically, we know about as much of how it works as they do on Safehold.

The "speed of gravity" can be derived from the Theory of General Relativity, and experiments support it. The effects of gravity tavel at the speed of light. The last thing needed to confirm it would be the detection of gravitational radiation.

Hi SWM

However, the advanced knowledge we now have did not stop the formulation of Newton's laws.

Incomplete theoretical knowledge does not always stop innovation.

Just say'n
