In "Queen's Gambit" King Roger is assassinated with a sabotaged grav ski. In "Promised Land" Lieutenant Dunsinane, Prince Michael's midshipman training officer refers to his death as a 'freak jet-ski accident'.
I find it hard to believe that this has not been mentioned in the forums. "Promised Land" was 19 years ago. I did search the forum to see if it had been mentioned but I could not find anything. Lonny |

Hey Lonnie, welcome to the forum. The accident was definitely involving a "Grav" ski, not a "Jet" ski. I've been here, and on Baen's bar before this forum, for ~20 years, and I don't remember the mis-naming, nor any mention of it. Good catch. In universe, a good reason might be the security over the incident. Many details were hidden, or covered up, because the RMN was not ready to go to war with Haven, and the opposition parties still had enough strength to squash war cries. Multiple stories might have been released by multiple venues (despite the Official announcement) to muddy the waters and make it so no one really knew the facts. ******

While in a parlance they could mean the same (Who knows with 2000 years of language drift) - "jet" usually means compressing and accelerating a medium as a method of propulsion. The grav ski was described as something analogous with Marty McFLy's hoverboard - with more power. There were no "jets" to move air as a means of propulsion, just countergrav devices. A Jet ski is currently a small waterborn craft with one seat and a water turbine propelling it, similiar in shape and function to a waterborn version of a snowmobile or motorcycle, sometimes with a guidable ski at the front for steering. ******

I also noticed some typos in At All Costs, with the last name of someone who started with a Y, and at least a few more.

Eloise's last name is spelled both Pritchart and Pritchard. Meghan's last name is spelled both Petersen and Peterson. Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense |

Many of the last dozen or so books never went through the final proofreading stages - many were turned in after they were due and went right to the typesetters. David and Eric have been sick and had family issues get in the way - as well as the normal issues of overlapping books runnng over - heck David even had a Doctor tell him to take 6 months off due to stress. So yes, there have been a few such issues. David even forgot about the first 3 SDs Manticore built when writing the story at the beginning of HoS until we reminded him. There have been both 11 and 12 Thorston' BBs and Ad Astra DNs (HoS has both pegged at 11 completed). So you will find many little problems, especially with the later books. ******

You could have a device that used a focused gravity field as a means of accelerating a jet of water. It would be much less likely to be damaged by ingesting something in the water and if it did ingest something there's no propeller to explode. |

True, but in this case the device floated on air, water wasn't the medium used. The device actually read as a snow board shape with a "back to the future" hover board tech in it. ******
