I'm pretty sure too that it was never said to be a spider. It makes no sense to me that it would be one.

Well, I can't find where my source was for this, I just had it in my notes without the ref. Strangely, the Wiki has it down as a Spider drive ship also, and I never base my notes on the Wiki, nor to I contribute to it, so someone else came to the same conclusion.

But I'm backing down until I find my reference (which might be in a an e-arc version that differed from the primary. screwed me up before...)

RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships."

The BC sized yacht I'm mentioning had a spider drive and streak drive - mentioned that it had a different shape than normal ships in the Honorverse because of the spider drive - really our first look at a spider drive ship (A. Detweiler was on his way from Mesa to Darius to see off the OB assault fleet).

Anisimovna and Harahap were on Streak dispatch boats with luxury accomodations - about 1/20th or so the size of the spider Yacht Detweiler had.

An I missing something? Having both a spider drive and a streak drive would make it a hybrid ship, which is something we were proposing in the ? thread.

It certainly would be cool if it became a reality, but that isn't something that would be lost in the background.

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

I suspect every spider has a streak drive.

With the exception of the Ghost scout craft that have to be carried through hyperspace, the same as LAC's, pinnaces, etc.

I am sure you meant manned spider drive craft.

They don't have to be. The Ghosts were carried through hyper in freighters as a way to infiltrate them into the Manticore system. (Can't remember if we got explicit text of the ones going to Grayson also being freighter delivered). But IIRC the books are explicit about them using their own hyper generators to get home.

IOW insertion via freighter was done for stealth not due to inability to use hyper unaided.

Ghost have hyperdrives.

A hybrid ship would be one with both spider and wedge, not streak drive. The streak drive is a much more powerful form of the hypergenerator; it doesn't serve to move the ship.

AFAICT, there's nothing stopping a ship from being triangular-cross-section to mount a spider drive and still have hammerheads for the impeller ring. In fact, they may be like that anyway because of the need to project Warshawksi sails to transit wormholes. But I doubt it can use both at the same time (not that I see a reason to do so anyway).

From chapter 40 of Storm from the Shadows:
He watched the stupendous freighters getting underway. They weren't the largest freighters in the galaxy, by any stretch of the imagination, but they were still big, solid ships, all of them of at least four million tons, and they'd been carefully modified for their current role. Their cargo doors were considerably larger than usual, and the cargo holds behind those doors had been configured to provide secure nests for the roughly frigate-sized Ghost-class scout ships they concealed.

From chapter 48 of Storm from the Shadows:
The deployment maneuver took quite a while, but no one was in a tearing hurry, and no one wanted to risk a last-minute, potentially catastrophic accident. Wallaby had made her alpha translation thirty minutes ago, and she was still several hours away from the wormhole junction she'd ostensibly come here to transit. At this range, even a fully conventional ship Chameleon's size would almost certainly have been invisible even to Manticoran sensor arrays (assuming its skipper was smart enough not to bring up his wedge, at any rate). Not that anyone intended to take any chances.
Chameleon slid completely free of Wallaby, like an Old Earth shark sliding tail-first from its mother's womb, and the modified packs fell away as the jettisoning charges blew. They disappeared quickly into the Stygian gloom—this far out from the system primary, even the star gleam on Chameleon's own flanks was scarcely visible—and Østby continued to watch the visual display as the running light constellations bejeweling the clifflike immensity of the freighter's mammoth hull drew steadily away from them.

As many recon drones as the GA can deploy, the numbers required start growing exponentially when they have to cover an expanding cone ahead of their fleet's base course. It's one of the reasons they moved so slowly into Galton orbit.

Microjumps. The fleet sits out there beyond the limit but every so often jumps somewhere else. Every bit of space hardware gets pecked to pieces. Sitting still doesn't make sense against an enemy with stealthy weapons--we already saw the Hasta at Beowulf, the GA knows about it.
