The few hours extra travel time is just not a big deal given the way interstellar commerce works. You certainly are better off coming out a bit short than a bit long, where you have to kill what is left of your velocity and turn around. Or where you come out in a cloud of plasma. So instead of buying super sophisticated hyperlogs and paying top dollar for astrogators you pop out, you see where you are and either go back into hyper or just continue.

Note that Manticore routinely saw merchants drop out light months short. A few light hours is nothing.

I doubt "routinely." But "it's known to happen" probably suffices.

Anyway, I stand corrected. Dropping out a few light-minutes (a few hours' travel time) away seems to be acceptable. What's 4 hours per translation more to the total travel time for a trip that lasts 10 days, including the offloading of cargo at destination...

A few light-hours might deserve the stern lecture from Astro Control. And one light-hour out is 15 hours more in travel time, which starts to be significant.

I believe it was mentioned that if the sensor ghost seen was a merchie, their Navigator would get his license held, requiring a re-qualification.

They did, but I understood that as a defence / security posture, not one for rendering assistance. You don't send 4 DD to simply assist a merchie that can't get their calculations right. Because of that, the SOP does not have to be because it's a common event.

This was not their first time going out to check this. It was something that they did all the time. It's why hyper capable ships were assigned to Perimeter Control instead of just LACs.

Typically from not particularly skilled navigators or ships having problems with their hyperlog. So they drop out of hyper short to refine their navigational solution, but not so short it's a complex microjump.

And once they have done this they continue on their way, and when the DDs arrive there is nothing present and nobody knows nuthin.

They are hyper capable ships, but they are destroyers, not scouts or yachts, or any civilian design. That's my point. If the problem was a bunch of merchies who keep doing this, then sending civilian ships to assist would suffice.

Sending a destroyer, much less four of them, indicates it's a defensive posture. That means it's done regardless of whether it happens frequently or not. So we can't conclude either way from this operation alone.

Of course it's military, they work for Perimeter Control, It's totally a security function. But it was clear this was far from the first time they had done this.
