I recommend the book over the movie, or in addition to. But the movie is definitely good.
I will accept that he was called Murphy by his friends. Yes, McMurphy did pretend to be insane in the beginning to get out of a jail term and instead do what he thought would be easy time. It reminds me of another movie that I did see, "Suddenly Last Summer". Both movies (and books and plays) are downers, that would only be entertaining if someone likes depressing endings (although Spoiler alert: Elizabeth Taylor's character was not lobotomized in the end).
