Everyone called him Murphy. I suppose it was a nickname. His "friends" called him Murphy. As MacGuiness is referred to as Mac.

Surely I'm not the only one familiar with this classic piece?

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

The Cuckoo's Nest

Incidentally, the whole psychology of the work is closely related to a notion I posited some time ago about the MA. And referenced again here with Jeremy. If the sub lines are always, or even sometimes, in contact with the Alphas, that contact itself changes their outlook on life. A form of Stockholm Syndrome.

Murphy played crazy amongst the insane. Eventually, he literally grew into the role. He became the part. Are you a product of your environment?

In McMurphy's case, was his insanity a result of the electroshock torture by Nurse Ratched? If so, then it was a product of his environment.

I beg your pardon!

She's simply one amongst many in The Big Score.

Play it again, Sam. Nope, it will never get old.

You really need to watch it. It spawns a detailed discussion in class. WAS he actually crazy, or was he playing the role of a lifetime.

I recommend the book over the movie, or in addition to. But the movie is definitely good.

I will accept that he was called Murphy by his friends. Yes, McMurphy did pretend to be insane in the beginning to get out of a jail term and instead do what he thought would be easy time. It reminds me of another movie that I did see, "Suddenly Last Summer". Both movies (and books and plays) are downers, that would only be entertaining if someone likes depressing endings (although Spoiler alert: Elizabeth Taylor's character was not lobotomized in the end).

I recall discussing quite some time ago whether the "urban" term "ratchet" was actually born from our lovely Nurse Ratched. Instead of what the scholars say ...

There were times he was even happier than usual to leave intelligence and covert operations to Collin, and this was definitely one of them.

Collin is also responsible for setting up the spy network. I suppose it's logical that the person responsible for the network of spies should also have control of the nanites.

"I hear there's been an opening in your department." LOL

Tlb!

I just now downloaded a copy of it in digital form and did a search for Murphy. Not a single Murphy appeared amongst over six hundred McMurphy's.

I wondered if I was sure, or whether I was simply remembering all the class discussions where WE shortened it to Murphy. Therefore, MY friends, classmates, nickname. Hmm. It was four decades ago the last read. Five for the first read. My apology.

Why not the CB term "ratchet jaw", which would play into the gender stereotype of talking endlessly?
