Fox News says viewers don't expect Tucker Carlson to report facts

A slander lawsuit brought against Fox News by a woman who says she had an affair with Donald Trump has taken a strange turn, with the network now claiming that host Tucker Carlson is not expected to present his audience with facts – even when he says he’s doing just that.

...

Calling the monologue clearly “hyperbolic” and describing it as an opinion protected by the first amendment, she posed a rhetorical question: “Would a reasonable viewer be coming here and thinking this is where I’m going to be hearing the news of the day?"



(Psst: That lawyer is talking to certain posters here with that rhetorical question)

They have a point. A reasonable person does not expect Tucker Carlson to tell the truth.

But a Fox viewer would.

In all fairness to Fox, which I have difficulty with, there is a split between the opinion side of their shop and the news side. The news side includes people like Chris Wallace, Shep Smith (when he was there) and Bret Hume who are competent newsmen who took pride in their profession as newsmen but who are nonetheless of conservative orientation.

Then there is the opinion side which comments on the news from a (ahem) distinctive point of view. That includes Hannity, Carlson, Fox and Friends, Dobbs, et.al. This is where the sinkhole of lies, conspiracy theories and so on comes from. Rather than giving the news or even commenting on it in an insightful way, they are feeding red meat to the right wingers.

Fox does have a pretty decent polling op which occasionally drives Trump bats.

No love lost between Trump and Murdoch, by the way. They hate each other's guts.

I've said it for years. Fox news is not bad, Fox opinion is. But Fox goes to far greater lengths to hide the seperation between the two than just about any other of the news networks.

I suspect Fox are happy to show such polls as they know it might get more Trump supporters to vote and they don't represent likely results due to gerrymandering.

If he wants more of his supporters to vote, why does he keep holding rallies in places where covid19 is spiking and he has a better chance of killing them off...

Reasonable people do not expect CNN to report the news in an unbiased way as well.

Arguments can be made about bias in reporting... but the Fox lawyers weren't arguing reasonable people wouldn't expect not to find bias on Fox programming.

They were arguing reasonable people wouldn't expect to find NEWS there.
