As in the US our states have some variation, but essentially the situation has been. Food, fuel, hardware, and alcohol shops open, dress shops shut (online ok). Only allowed out of home for essential services like going to work, or shopping, and then only one at a time and local. No family visits or travel. No elective surgery or non urgent dental.
These restrictions are gradually being lifted now. You can travel up to 50 kms, dress shops and such are reopening, however you still have to stay 1.5 metres from others. Reminds me of trying to fault find a car or computer, just change one thing at a time.
Not having anything like the US National Debt our governments have been able to pay people to stay at home for now, (about $750 a week I think). People who have lost their jobs due to this and can't pay rent, can't be evicted.
For the past two months I have been legally able to go grocery shopping, but being in several at risk groups I've opted to get my stuff delivered.
As I have said, we look at the two extremes of China's and the US's street scenes, and each seems surreal and SiFi to us.
I will finally mention that we did dodge a bullet, having extensive Chinese tourism, education and business ties, but shut that down hard and early, much to their disgust.

With a moratorium on evictions or even rent, it will be interesting to see how many landlords start torching their rental properties for the insurance money.

That wont happen Fly.

But there's lots of little amendments in the offing. Always is with rushed legislation.

Thought I'd get a comment about the evictions. I'm a multiple landlord and luckily all my tenants are OK. If one was in trouble I'd have been talking to them anyway. Not as dramatic as it seems, as the several welfare nets should ensure that people could still be able to pay some rent. Caused some angst at first, until landlords realised that. Can't just go on a rent strike, must prove a drop in income from covid, and be in financial trouble.
My houses are reasonably safe anyway, as I have selected three bedroom, one bathroom self standing bungalows in excellent condition, not old but not new. These rent at about $300 a week in our area, so even those on welfare could just afford them.

I'm a bit afraid that we are in for a massive second wave of infections the way some states are handling the reopening. Some are so anxious about the economy that they are ploughing ahead even though their areas haven't peaked yet.

I guess we are about to find out if the Covid and the economy can coexist.

Your "liberal" government is actually more reasonable than mine. Oregon has imposed a complete moratorium on evictions with no compensation for landlords when tenants don't pay. There are efforts to organize rent strikes.

The punch line is that my marijunna bootlegging tenant had inherited a duplex back in 2015. The celebrated the windfall by investing the cash flow in building their bootleg marijunna grow on my property. (Pot is decriminalized under Oregon law but remains a Federal Felony. The Feds continue to prosecute landlords and impose civil forefeiture on rental properties that tenants use to grow.). Now it appears that my tenants' tenants are no longer paying their rent which will cost my tenants about $600 per week. This is occurs just weeks after my Tennant crashed his Ford F-350 in a drunk driving accident. It appears that he didn't have comprehensive insurance to pay for repairs. He also refused field sobreity testing, breathalyzer and blood tests. Very big no no in Oregon. He just destroyed a vehicle worth a minimum of $25,000, lost his license, had to pay an attorney about $10,000 to get into a diversion program.

Now the real interesting Revelations. I just stirred up some shit with the justice department regarding the corrupt Attorney in which I cited the Wikipedia page on shotgun slugs as proof that he either knew or should have known that his "gun expert" was lying. Suddenly the Wikipedia page has been edited to obscure the fact that Breneke slugs and Foster slugs are designed to be fired through a choke. Guess who edited the Wikipedia page? You might be wrong. It turns out that the corrupt Attorney's wife is a Deputy District Attorney with Columbia County. Wikipedia traces all editing and retains information including the IP address of whoever does the editing. If the IP address is from a computer in the office of the Columbia County District Attorney's office, then little Kimmy has big problems. Also, the references to the article in CRIME LAB DIGEST remain intact which should be very embarrassing for whoever did the editing.

Fly, I've followed your rental story and do sympathize.
Over the years I've evicted problem tenants for much less than you have mentioned.
Can't do it at the present, but no need as I hopefully have worked out how to get and keep good tenants.

Costs, as I need to get them through a registered real estate agent (after selecting a good one), so they aren't black banned on the Agent's data base. Then treat them well, and charge about 5% less rent than the going rate on similar properties.
Our "liberal" "goody two shoes" "gasp- socialist" system does allow us normally to get rid of dead beats.
However I do fondly remember helping a good friend who got rid of problem tenants, by her cutting off their water and electricity, then talking loudly about midnight fires.
As an aside I have two shotguns. A classic side by side that can handle up to SGs (OOs) (loaded for bear) magnum 3 inch banded cartridges, and a bolt action 5 shot single barrel with a detachable choke that loves all rifled slugs. For use if T Rexs reappear!

And I bet those guns are also good at standing off Big Foot should he make an appearance...

Ironically, my tenant problem would not be so intractable if Americans were not quite so familiar with firearms. To many of us grew up watching cartoons of Elmer Fudd hunting Buggs Bunny and Daffy Duck with his trust shotgun. This conditions people to think of shotguns as harmless toys rather than deadly weapon. You can reload 12 gauge shotgun shells with 7 bullets from an AR-15. Accuracy is awful but wounds are horrific. A shotgun loaded with slugs is a poor man's elephant gun. (Slugs will shoot through a choke just fine but they do loose a little velocity and accuracy.). Saboted slugs are especially lethal to megafauna. Slugs would do a number on T-Rex but I'd rather have my Barrett .50 for that.

Saw Trump on TV today looking puzzled when asked what life would be like post Covid-19? He had to think for a moment, then said words to the effect that "In a few months it will be back just as it always was".

Yeah, that is something that he would say. He's not long on imagination except when he wanders off into kookie conspiracy theories.
