Would like some of those as well.

Also:
I like the Manticore Ascendant ones, and seeing the other House Companion books, like House of Lies and House of Shadows.

To be honest, I would like to see more about Silesia (How it went from a functional government-ish to pirate haven; has the appeal of watching a train crash but I just want to know), about Haven and it's founding setup making the Haven Quadrant, about how the Solly League got made and expanded out.

A big one would be the discussions and development leading to the founding of the Star Kingdom. That's got to interesting to watch.

As for finding stuff:

We know that the Malign had it headquarters on Mesa, we know of companies that had offices on Mesa, like Manpower, Technodyne, etc. We know that the Malign made a navy.

Navies require logistics to function and carry out missions. Unless Malign setup a long term colony in their shipyard place, they will need to ship in the work force, and arrange for the delivery of gear for making parts, etc. So there is a paper trail of shipments, unless everything was disposed of after, but the navy wouldn't be producing any profits, so Malign still has to pay out for building all of the infrastructure, which leave some kind of trail, in people as well as files. Plus, where exactly would they get the foodstuffs, without it being shipped in?

Hades needed shipments to survive, but it was a prison planet. Dark Fall tells us about Bolthole, and making that work required resources, but was proven to rather unprofitable so far. For the Haven leadership.

So Anton and Victor could try looking into shippments and papers, because somebody had to come up with the Streak drive, and there were supposed to be research teams.

The Malign couldn't have gotten rid of everything.

Actually you have the Malign's Shipyards, Darius, backwards. Instead of creating a new infrastructure, and shipping in workers and parts, they created a new colony, artifically inflated with slave birthing techniques. THEN, it grew it's own food - it built it's own infrastructure - it built it's own shipyards - it made it's own warships - It taxed it's own citizens to get the funds to make the warships.

That is not to say there has been no communications, no tech transfers, no food shipments over the years - but the colony setup you are looking for was 150-200 years ago, and built most of what we see today, a 3+ billion human planet with 1st class shipyard, by itself.

Well, eventually a book will go into the public domain. Copyright can only be extended so far.

That said, it would be *nice* if more authors (or their heirs) would hasten the process once a book goes "out of print" for an extended period; or likely forever. After all, if the sales stop so do the royalties; so they're not really losing anything by making it possible for electronic copies to be saved for future (generations?) of science fiction readers.

I don't think that's ever really given any explicit credence.

From the "history" we know; colonization - or possibly even exploration - didn't always go from star system to next nearest star system. Beowulf was one of the initial extra-solar colonies; but they aren't anywhere near to Sol.

So exactly where Darius is located could be anywhere from within the theoretical boundary of the core systems all the way out to past the verge. As long as it's not generally known to have been colonized, it could be a system skipped; explored but not colonized previously, or maybe even one lost when an explorer vessel had some accident and never returned home.

Remember Bolthole, after all.

Darius is at the far end of a WH. It could be pretty much anywhere within 1000 LY of the "twins", which are not located on a map IIRC.

.

That's 1000 ly from Felix. The Twins are a different terminus of the Felix junction, so it could be anywhere within 2000 ly of The Twins.

Of course, my suspicion is that it's not that far from Bolthole.

Felix isn't that far from Mannerheim in normal space, IIRC. And Mannerheim is in the Shell, IIRC, which puts some limits on that.

I've been out of touch recently – does anybody happen to know if there is any activity on the "Manticore Ascendant" series?

Last I heard was “yes, it’s in progress.” But no idea when or what’s ahead of it etc.
