Not everyone is in a position to buy the hardcover when it comes out or has the inclination or capability to read it electronically. And of course Weber books tend to take two full years to come out in paperback.

I know in the past I've been in the position where I had to wait until the local library got their copy in. I eventually bought them all anyway, but the price differential does matter to some people.

I had a hard cover ore-ordered... it got lost in the UPS delivery system so I ordered a kindle version (actually read the free sample first then ordered the kindle version)till my replacement order hard cover came in.

Bottom line... I recommend that you look into a kindle... You can get a lot of good - great books for free or up to normal price. I have more than 300 books in my kindle including almost all of David Weber's books.

I'm a bit of a technophobe and hate reading large amounts of text off electronic screens. Admittedly I've never tried a Kindle but eye strain is a concern.

E-ink readers (ala traditional Kindles) aren't great with pictures, but eye strain isn't really a problem with them.

I have about 600 books on an old kindle. It reads perfectly well and I am able to read the maps from the 163x books.

Also, Bookbub.com has a lot of free and inexpensive books listed every day. Sometimes by top authors and sometimes a chance to catch a new and interesting one.

I doubt you will go this direction, but most tablet e-reader software has either a night setting or the ability to change the foreground and background colors. Setting a black background and a mild orange font color is easy to read and limits eye strain - day or night. Also, all readers have the ability to change font size (and usually the font itself), so as our eyes age, you can select the font and size that work for you.

When I read Kindle on my iPad I can play with things like that. But the basic simple stuff is very easy on the basic kindle. And it's easy to download from the Baen website.

I tend to be a real traditionalist and when my wife gave me a kindle for Christmas about 5 years ago I though it would sit in a drawer somewhere...

I now find myself reading paper books and touching a word to activate the dictionary
As well, I can highlight a block of text and add notes in a way that I never would with a hardbound book... I can change the size of the font and the brightness of the screen... Eye strain has not been a factor and there are several places to get free books

I don't get a penny for endorsement but, you may find you are pleasantly surprised.

Remember that if you bought an e-version already for your computer, moving books to the kindle is free.

Of course, if you have a friend who has them, there is no DRM. Not nice to do in a big way but a book or two seems to be fine with the Baen crew since it encourages more e purchases.

In the old day, we would have passed a single paperback between groups of friends, or waited in line for our turn at the library. Sharing an e-book is roughly the same thing, as long as it's among a small group.

Baen understands. Most other publishers don't. I've had two or three friends who now own a reasonably complete set of the Honorverse books thanks to reading one or two of mine.
