It's just numbers. According to Google there are about 180 million pet cats, dogs and birds in the US, and about 41,000 homeless veterans. Add in all the horses, snakes, fish, turtles, rabbits, lizards, hamsters and whatnot and there are easily 5,000 times as many pets as homeless veterans. If we spent $100 a year on each pet, and $400,000 on each homeless veteran, the pets still win.
