America is, or rather was, a socialist country. It's moving towards an Oligarchy which is a bad thing.
Like Australia, New Zealand, western Europe, hell. The entire western world is built on a socialist system.

When it wasn't we had transportation for being poor, work houses, children in mines, etc.

IIRC, America started out Communist, not Republic. The Founding Fathers set up several Communes and promptly failed to grow enough food to see them through the winter, only the generosity of the local natives allowing the majority of them to get through to spring.
After that, the concept of Communism in America became rather disliked as the attempted implementation of it almost killed the country off before it could get started.
America started Communist (not Republic) and proceeded to eagerly embrace Capitalism as a result.
