"I Shall not cry Return! Return!
— Nor weep my years away; But just as long as sunsets burn, — And dawns make no delay, I shall be lonesome — I shall miss Your hand, your voice, your smile, your kiss. Not often shall I speak your name, — For what would strangers care That once a sudden tempest came — And swept my gardens bare, And then you passed, and in your place Stood Silence with her lifted face. Not always shall this parting be, — For though I travel slow, I, too, may claim eternity — And find the way you go; And so I do my task and wait The opening of the outer gate." ~ Ellen M. Huntington Gates ~*~

It is ironic that the poem is so poignant when the subject is trying to be so upbeat. Thank you roseandheather for bringing such a wonderful piece of poetry to our attention. .

Nice poem rose.
It captures her essence and will that her heart will go on. Always a tear-jerker for me... My Heart Will Go On Celine Dion Every night in my dreams I see you, I feel you That is how I know you, go on Far across the distance And spaces between us You have come to show you, go on Near, far, wherever you are I believe that the heart does go on Once more you open the door And you're here in my heart and my heart will go on and on Love can touch us one time And last for a lifetime And never let go till we're gone Love was when I loved you One true time I hold you In my life we'll always go on Near, far, wherever you are I believe that the heart does go on Once more you open the door And you're here in my heart And my heart will go on and on You're here, there's nothing I fear And I know that my heart will go on We'll stay forever this way You are safe in my heart and my heart will go on and on Also reminds me of some of Poe's, appropriate for the occasion, somber prose... A Dream Within a Dream Edgar Allan Poe Take this kiss upon the brow! And, in parting from you now, Thus much let me avow — You are not wrong, who deem That my days have been a dream; Yet if hope has flown away In a night, or in a day, In a vision, or in none, Is it therefore the less gone? All that we see or seem Is but a dream within a dream. I stand amid the roar Of a surf-tormented shore, And I hold within my hand Grains of the golden sand — How few! yet how they creep Through my fingers to the deep, While I weep — while I weep! O God! can I not grasp Them with a tighter clasp? O God! can I not save One from the pitiless wave? Is all that we see or seem But a dream within a dream? A Dream Edgar Allan Poe In visions of the dark night I have dreamed of joy departed-- But a waking dream of life and light Hath left me broken-hearted. Ah! what is not a dream by day To him whose eyes are cast On things around him with a ray Turned back upon the past? That holy dream—that holy dream, While all the world were chiding, Hath cheered me as a lovely beam A lonely spirit guiding. What though that light, thro' storm and night, So trembled from afar-- What could there be more purely bright In Truth's day-star? Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense |

Poor Eloise
Great poem, thank you for sharing it. Also for making me sad all over again about these two awesome people being torn away from each other by war. I'd almost managed to forget about it. Okay, that's a lie, I will never forget. This is one I've often thought of while reading the HH series, whether about Javier and Eloise, Honor and Paul and later Hamish, or even the non-romantic deep and abiding love between someone like Honor and Alastair. Richard Lovelace ---------------- Tell me not, sweet, I am unkind, That from the nunnery Of thy chaste breast and quiet mind To war and arms I fly. True, a new mistress now I chase, The first foe in the field; And with a stronger faith embrace, A sword, a horse, a shield. Yet this inconstancy is such As thou too shalt adore; I could not love thee, dear, so much, Loved I not honor more. |

I will continue to be bitter about Javier UNTIL THE HEAT DEATH OF THE UNIVERSE. This is not an exaggeration. And yes, "To Lucasta" has always struck me as incredibly appropriate for these two. To the extent that their relationship has a defining trait, it is "loved I not Honor more." Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to crawl into a corner and weep buckets over these two. Again. ~*~

It certainly p****d me off when I read that part of the story! Andreas' was close to that as well. Strangely, neither Alister's or Andrew's affected me as much, probably because they died doing their duty (which I know was also true for the others, but go figure!). The one pair of minor characters I wish we could have gotten to know better were Roslee Orndorf & Banshee- I wanted to see how a different adopted pair navigated Naval service! |

I am not bitter about Javier's death. I think it added a lot to the storyline. Especially since his death came as a surprise. I felt like Alistar's death was coming since it had become clear DW wasn't going to be able to close out Honor's storyline in this book. If there is any character I miss the most it is Andreas.

Hmmmm. I almost expected to see a rose original in Eloise's voice titled Finish my Name.
