Nitpick: A collection of electronics and lithium deutride. Plain hydrogen doesn't make a useful h-bomb unless you can generate pressures far beyond what we can today. Even with using an h-bomb as the trigger we can't get a boom out of plain hydrogen, the reaction is too slow.

And even with the astronomically high pressures and temperatures at the center of the Sun, normal hydrogen won't produce fusion without quantum mechanics. It's The Power Of Quantum Mechanics That Allows The Sun To Shine

There was something in the news in the last day or so that some science wonks have a special superconductor that can contain fusion reactions and that we'll have commercial fusion in about a quarter of a century.

Of course, people have been predicting it would be a quarter of a century away for a half century.

But this announcement actually recognized the real problem. So...maybe.

You get hot enough and it would go boom. IIRC that's well into the 9 figures, though.

After the Beowulf fiasco settles, and the galaxy gets back to "normal," who is going to take on the mantle of enforcing the Eridani Edict? Whoever does, should probably put it in writing so the galaxy will be aware of it, so they'll have to get everyone else in the galaxy to sign off on it just like the original enforcers. Or it won't be anything short of vigilante justice. Unless, of course, yours is the planet skrewed.

Which offers up an amusing scenario. The RMN or the GA or some entirely new alliance including the Andermani, approaching the anorexic remnants of the gorilla asking them to sign on for "protection."

I find that very amusing. Very! LOL

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

Though I’d point out that the current SLN enforced Edict is nothing short of vigilante justice. It’s not a treaty that anybody signed; it was a unilateral declaration that if you do certain things the SLN will show up and force a regime change on you.

The only thing that gave it some interstellar acceptance is that pretty much everybody agreed that preventing wanton mass destruction of planetary populations is a good thing.

Actually, "Normal" is ending. In the prelude in the Universe of Honor, we are told that Honor is living in the last few years of a long period of galactic harmony, followed by a period of galactic upheaval.

RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships."

Little doubt of that. The League enforced harmony. Of course, we know the phrase "the made a desert and called it peace." That's what was going on for most of the galaxy.

That control is badly fraying. Things will get far more chaotic.
Which happens to be exactly what MAlign wants.

Yes, to be sure. Unfortunately its not quite shaking out the way they planned. Manticore was supposed to be gone, a much diminished league was supposed to wreck itself and Haven. Beowulf was supposed to be all alone with no allies. OOps

The main point was the destruction of the League. MAlign worked on the idea that Haven would take Manticore and then go after the League.

Instead they combined. And the League falls apart.

Beowulf itself is more an emotional target...not really necessary. And if they can get the Mandarins to destroy it, that might be the final nail in the mandarins' coffin.
