Manticore isn't a totalitarian state. If the Manticorian people learn what happened they will be the ones calling for blood here. Haven is even worse states since their systems can vote to leave.

Look Manticore doesn't magically get to dictate history. That's not how things work. Furthermore, the Manticore has a really good incentive to repudiate Henke. Those stealth ships can come back and burn Manticore or any other planet they feel like. Planets are too big of targets to defend effectively, if the attackers are willing to cross the Alpha wall outside of detection range. Manticore has no recourse if that happens.

Manticore NEEDS the precedent that planets don't face strategic bombardment. That precedent is why the Yawata strike inflicted minimal damage to their worlds. Had the attackers simply been willing to send the spent pods and graser torpedoes crashing into the planet things would have been vastly worse.

Glad to see you've accepted the standard interpretation of that phrase.

Au contraire, mon frère. It is a sentiment made in jest, just like John Harrington.

Standard interpretation does not make right. Bastardization of history is a staple, but not a delicacy.

Pardon my boldness to call attention.

Helloooo! Sentiment found here. It ain't over 'til the fat lady sings. The MAlign may be the ones who ultimate write history and get to label past deeds. If the MAlign comes out on top and the GA is toppled, then John Harrington's shoe will be on the other foot, when the Alignment searches for war criminals against the Malign State of the Union err Onion.

Why tlb, in as much of an amused southern drawl as I can muster. I don't recall you being a part of that thread. Yet you speak of it in such exasperated, sentimental tones. Could "tlb" be an alias of someone else in that thread like the many faces of Georgia Sakristos, Damien Harahap or Eve—Freudian slipped off the tongue?

No, I was not in the thread; I go back and read threads stopped by Duckk sometimes, to see what the offence was. It seems that was the only one I have ever seen stopped for monomania (that not precise and so much a part of the pop psychology that I dislike, that I have to apologize for not knowing a better word). There are many reasons not to comment in more than general terms, including the injunction against injecting current politics for a thread whose name starts "potus says:". As a Northerner residing in Richmond VA, your southern drawl has little effect.

Then you've read several of my threads. Threads that aren't afraid to take the bull by the horns in hopes of soliciting some real intelligent discourse, but oftentimes fail to find any treecat IQ amidst sophomoric ideals. Which oftentimes left Duckk with only one recourse, more oftentimes than not, which resulted in several threads suffering from premature ejection. Sophomoric attitudes struggle with properly donning a prophylactic, therefore—for safety's sake—had to be snipped. It is a shame that mature adults cannot discuss religion, amongst other things, even in the Free Range section of the galaxy. But alas, 'It is what it is' and it ain't what it ain't.

I am a southern boy, born and raised, that's a fact. Though I don't sound southern. It is one of the first things people comment on. I don't even sound American, hear tell my many foreign friends. I've seen about every corner of the globe. My parents were keen believers that travel offers an invaluable and necessary education not found in textbooks. So I do not wear the blinders that most arrogant Americans do. Or even of people hailing from other cultures whose eyes remain closed to the wonders of life on the big blue yonder, for that matter.

For the record, if you feel the offense of that thread was having "POTUS" in the title, you're fooling yourself. Actually, the subject matter is tantalizingly close to the very same discussion at hand. It is one of the reasons I said I find it... amusing. Other than it being interesting. It is why I joined the forum, for fulfilling conversation. Or fantasies thereof.

Also, I was NOT trying to rekindle that thread. I was merely stating fact. Fact that I learned in school. The true meaning of John Harrington's quote is independent of the ignorance in that thread and is available for me to use anywhere life takes me. Seeing as though I paid handsomely for my education. Yes, I paid for my own education, not my parents. I was able to do so by the time I attended Uni.

I managed to leave my sophomoric years behind me, when I wasn't a sophomore—even when in high school—even when I was.

For the record, if you feel the offense of that thread was having "POTUS" in the title, you're fooling yourself. .

No, I am not offended; the problem is trying to avoid "Simon Says" jokes in the current climate.

It is amusing and appalling to read the occasional letter to the editor of the local paper complaining that Lincoln was a "war criminal" and should have been sent to prison. As if being assassinated as a tyrant was not enough.
The "War between the States" is a prime counter example to the statement that the victor writes the histories. In the aftermath there were considerable efforts by southern writers to repackage the war as a heroic "Lost Cause", fought to defend "States Rights" against an imperial federal government. This required ignoring the various Proclamations of Succession, which made it clear that what most was being defended was the right to define property in support of the state's "peculiar institution". Still these efforts were generally successful, perhaps culminating in "Gone with the Wind".

PS. Yahoo Answers says that this is the best interpretation:
Treason doth never prosper. What's the reason?
For if it prosper, none dare call it "treason."

In other words, if somebody commits treason and actually succeeds (overthrows the government and takes over), nobody will dare call the traitor a traitor because he's now the king or dictator and will punish anybody who says his actions were treasonous. So the only kinds of treason you can safely call "treason" are the ones that don't "prosper" (that don't succeed). So, the first line of the rhyme says, this makes it look as if treason never succeeds!

The rhyme was written by John Harrington, an English politician and writer who was about 20 years older than Shakespeare.

Which seems to be what you say, not so?
But that quote might be paired with this one, which has the other interpretation:
Successful and fortunate crime
is called virtue
Seneca, Herc. Furens, ii. 250.
