Manticore does have the distinction of having a biome close enough to Earth's that it developed a plague that could attack humans. I don't know if that's enough to lead speculation down a rabbit hole in the search for a motive.

Um, I hate to burst bubbles but Manticore finds out about the nexus relatively quickly, it should be either the next book or the following one. In fact, based on what we know, it should have in call to vengeance, but then the Andies were added.
They then examine it and discover that it is well beyond their abilities to actually survey, maybe beyond anyone's capabilities at the time. They then spend decades arguing over whether to survey, opposing factions argue that the estimated price, which may have been decreasing over time, is too high or that pandora's box should not openned.

Where did you hear this?

RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships."

The stuff about the nexus is in one of the early background appendices, and is, I things, repeat in HoS.

The stuff about the Andies causing a delay in parts of the timeline was a post from around when the Travis Long trilogy became the Travis Long Cycle, and then the Manticore Ascending series, which was then clarified to be more than a trilogy, there was something about how the Andies had battleships, and that one might appear but that it would require some convolutions as Manticore and the empire were too far apart for direct interaction.

There is a SPOILER warning. Even so anyone following must be thinking,”how come these guys know all this when ‘A Call to Vengeance’ isn’t even released yet?” Due March isn’t it? What is the point of advance review copies so long before release?

1. It allows people to mention errors like "tied-locked" should be "tidal-locked"
2. it seems as though they charge more for E-arc books than they do for non e-arc books.

Well one assumes those suggestions Her Majesty offered foreshadow the next book. As for the coin toss, just speculating.

A thought.

Do we know have to start referring to Travis as Commander Long in a similar fashion to a well known secret agent who goes by the moniker of Commander Bond?

And will Travis have to start introducing himself as 'Long, Travis Long'?

No, Travis is more a David Cornwell sort of spook rather than a Sidney Reilly.

A thought that occurs to me as I reread the first two books ... do we definitively know that Travis is not Gavin's heir and the next in line for the Barony?

The other possibility, given the hint in the main series that Winterfell later becomes a Dukedom, is that Gavin is a Duchairn in waiting. Or a future Prime Minister. Or both. :)
