Judging from everyone's input, I'm going to hazard a guess that Passenger Liners will have the reactor close to the skin, since they aren't supposed to be fired on anyways. That would facilitate ejecting the reactor and saving the many lives on board. Emergency safety first on a ship of that type? Quickly trying to evacuate the headcount aboard a Liner may not be feasible.

What about Royal Yachts? Surely there is some way that Beth can abandon ship? But where would her reactor be placed?

What about LACs, what are the options of the crew, say she's badly damaged, all controls are lost and she's quickly heading into danger?

Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense

LAC gets hit its toast. Its an egg with a big hammer.

Everything but the warships have the reactor close to the outer hull so it can be ejected in an emergency (Shadow of Saganami). I think it is standard part of law everywhere to have escape pods and some kind of emergency suits in ALL passenger space craft.

Elizabeth's new royal yacht, HMS Duke of Cromarty is a slightly modified Agamemnon BCP. So the reactors on it are mounted in the same locations that the standard Agamemnon BCPs mount theirs.

I'm going to hazard another guess that her previous yacht was destroyed during O.B. I don't recall.

Can I assume that her new yacht is fully crewed and armed to the teeth as any current battlecruiser would be? Since Apollo is still highly classified, I'm assuming Beth's yacht probably wouldn't have it?

There is no way I'm going to believe that ye thorough Jayne's grads haven't already speculated on her royal ordnance. So a link to the thread(s) would suffice if you like.

What officers would actually be capable enough to draw that duty? Surely Beth has no Santinos or Youngs aboard. Her crew would seem to be a vetting nightmare.

BTW, I'm going to assume that her royal Cromarty's tactics would be to flee first than engage with such important clientele onboard. But in case she has to fight.

I'm sure she is probably CM heavy like AF-1. She would probably employ stand off tactics like a CLAC.

I'd like to thank everyone responsible for painting me a more accurate picture of what happens when the klaxon sounds.

So, thanks.

As always Maxx, thanks for the hard work and renderings.

HMS Queen Adrienne was destroyed in Operation Hassan, IIRC. Actually, they stuffed Earl Gold Peak and his son in escape pods, but didn't eject them, didn't they?

Your questions about the current royal yacht, HMS Duke of Cromarty are answered in the link to the Pearl of Weber.

The previous royal yacht, HMS Queen Adrienne (carrying Manticoran Prime Minister Cromarty, Manticoran Foreign Secretary Earl Gold Peak, Grayson Chancellor Prestwick & Grayson Councilor for Interstellar Affairs Hodges) was destroyed while in company with Grayson One en-route to the Blackbird Yard from Grayson in Ashes of Victory, when Honor used her runabout's wedge to kamikaze the missile that went after Grayson One (carrying Protector Benjamin Mayhew and Queen Elizabeth).

Yes they are answered.* Even the question I forgot to ask regarding the effect of so much space being used for the contingency -- effectively cutting the ordnance in half!

*Well, all of the questions except where the crew are recruited from. Seems it'd be a good position for Bachfish.

Sorry about that Vince. But the link wouldn't previously work for me. I was in the middle of attempting to set up a personalized triple boot environment (Windows, Linux, Android) on my tablet and windows decided to do an upgrade W/O my permission. Yes, you can toggle the upgrade feature off if you like. But I forgot that once you do finally allow a subsequent upgrade, the upgrade overwrites your personal global security settings which includes the toggle feature! (Also w/o your express permission.) Phucking ARROGANT windows! Anyways, the new upgrade broke my flash and java. Which I knew it would. That is why I refused the upgrade in the first place on this go round because I was tinkering! Dammit! So much for the tinkering. Link working now.

Bill Gates decided to call it Windows way back when, because he knew it'd eventually make you want to jump out of one.

At low altitude the effect is fairly even but at high altitude the density is low and thus it spreads much farther--and the density is variable (a lot higher at the lowest point than the highest.) Nuclear-pumped charge difference with an ionization path between them--you get the mother of all lightning bolts.

There are a variety of mechanisms (at least 4) by which the various components of EMP are generated. All of them, other then direct irradiation of the spacecraft (which means the weapon detonates is VERY close), will only impact electronics in the immediate vicinity of a planet. Some work by impacting the planets magnetic field, some the planets atmosphere.

I remembered a bit of textev regarding EMP but tracking it down wasn't easy. BUT! Heeere's Johnny...

The initial detonations ripped a thermonuclear hole straight through the electronic shield which had sheltered the Manticoran LACs, and a second echelon of the same massive salvo raced through the opening. Its birds detonated ten thousand kilometers closer to the Manties, ripping the hole even deeper and wider, and the next echelon exploited the opening the second had created. The third echelon closed to within as little as two or three thousand kilometers of the Manticoran LACs before it detonated in a final wavefront of blast, heat, and hard radiation.

The cumulative effect was devastating. The "triple ripple," as Clapp had dubbed it, not only irradiated and seriously degraded the remote platforms (those it didn't destroy outright), but also wreaked grievous carnage, however briefly, on the Manticorans' onboard fire control systems and sensors. Like all warship sensors, they were hardened against EMP, but nothing had prepared them for the precisely synchronized and timed detonations of that many multi-megaton warheads in so small a volume of space and time. Indeed, it was unlikely that anything could have prepared them. It was as if they'd suddenly found themselves staring directly into the belly of a star, and for precious seconds they were dazzled and confused by the sheer, unimaginable ferocity of the event.

I can't shake the notion that the Royal Yacht should be CM intensive, like AF-1. Defensive capabilities due to the football you are carrying becomes just as important as offensive capability. Perhaps more so. It is poor consolation knowing you destroyed what was shooting at you if your Queen is killed. Is there a such thing as CM pods? If so, tow them phuckers! No Queen should leave home without them. There should be enough CMs to light up the sky like the 4th of July.
