I am sure that sign is a mandatory subject in schools
on Sphinx. Has it spread to Manticore, Gryphon, Grayson and perhaps even Beowulf ? |

It's a long way from mandatory just yet. The treecats haven't been doing it all that long, you know. "Oh, bother!" said Pooh, as Piglet came back from the dead. |

Even so I imagine the Sphinx youngsters are ahead of the
game. It would almost be like a secret language, until their elders catch up. Kids do like that sort of thing. |

If not mandatory in the primary schools, per se, what about the navy? Sag Isle curriculum? And perhaps if not a prereq there, is it offered? It seems unlike the astuteness of the RMN not to be able to communicate with such an important member of the crew. Especially when said treecat wants to tell you that he senses trouble. Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Treecats - even now, after they took guardian duties for prominent political and military leaders - are to small (in numbers) for Saganami Island to make learning sign a requirement. Only thing I can see is, that some kind of pidgin is teached, with only the most important signs like "He's lying"; "Alarm!" or so ... On the other hand - scratch "Alarm" or anything else comparable; after all, every treecat ever born will attack by himself, as soon as he senses danger against his person because the assassin has to be in range of the treecats person or protege. |

I doubt that the course would even be offered at Saganami Island. Mostly I base that around the idea that most RMN personnel would never encounter a tree-cat in the normal course of business. The furry little critters are simply too few and too far between.
Additionally even if the tree-cats spread through the fleet for specialty work most ships won't have a use for them. A ship in space wouldn't reach a range at which a tree-cat could divine anything useful to pass on. I could see tree-cats becoming a standard fixture for intel officers, ambassadorial staffs, security and political groups. Especially court cases. They could probably sell their services quite well to lawyers, for instance. So either an officer chooses to learn sign language on their own out of curiosity or they go down a specialist path (Intel or security, say) which requires them to adapt to working with tree-cats and requires that they learn sign language. |

In some places, teachers of deaf human children refuse to learn or teach sign language. Certainly, it's not part of most curriculums.
So I'm not holding my breath for the 'cats on universal sign education. |

It's a trivial issue to solve with technology.

It also seems that it would bring up a new school discipline: foreign languages. EVERYONE EVERYWHERE seems to speak the same language with minor dialect changes. That could make things tricky. Also, most planets do not have treecats yet. They're almost all on Sphynx. Yes, there are adoptees on Manticore and Gryphon and Honor brought some to Grayson and founded a colony. Most of the new additions to the fleet are based on Sphynx. I would also guess that learning the basics is not that difficult. It is the nuances that get tricky. |
