At the end of Caldron of Ghosts, Admiral Gold Peak's arrival saved Victor Cachat & Thandi Palane before the final assault of Neue Rostock. This was confirmed in SoV, but I'd have thought that the Torches' 1st conversation with the fleet, before they made orbit, would be "yes we're still alive, guess what the Malign' s been up to......."
The way SoV ended, it sure sounded like Admiral Gold Peak hasnt spoken in depth to Cachat yet, although she did speak to Palane BEFORE making orbit. Now that the fleet is in orbit of Mesa l was very surprised that Gold Peak is wondering who set off all these nukes - simultaneously. Of course Malign agent-provocateur Audrey O'Hanrahan is doing her job, adding hydrogen to the fire by casting doubts about the Manties, Peeps & Torch. Im actually wondering if she can be turned after witnessing the cold-blooded ruthless of the Malign blowing up 6Million Mesans in one event and assigning the blame to the Manties; as a cover for purging their own people. All this after after months of atrocities. Finally, any word on DW's schedule for next book in Honervetse, safehold, Prince Roger; anthing at all?????? |

Here's the main problem with both books:Cauldron never got finished due the conflicting schedules of Flint and Weber and their health issues, and a semi-finished copy was turned in to meet the deadline. Victory never got completly edited and was turned in just before the printing deadline... actually a little past it. So neither is what should be considered a finished work. I actually believe (with no evidence, mind you), that the end parts of SoV were originally planned for CoG, but were not finished in time; so to send CoG to the printers in time, we got that hurried ending of CoG instead. I almost expect another round of "alternate viewpoint details" to the "Last Days on Mesa" chapter to come in the next book that will change everything that we've been told happened, to make everything flow into the final storyline. ******
RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships." |

Yup. Thankfully the Flint/Weber scheduling morass is behind us. SoV was delayed by a request by Baen's editor for revisions, which is why it didn't look as finished as it could have been. (I have no idea what needed revising. Maybe he wanted to take the revolt on the Swahili-speaking planet out.) My suspicion is that Baen is simply not scheduling anything until they've got the final manuscript in their hands. Twice burned and all that. |

My bold to call attention. Vedddy interesting post John. It would be rather interesting to see what Torch's slaves would ultimately think of the specialized lines. It would also interest me to know the ultimate whims of the 'holier-than-thou' Beowulfan establishment regarding, and even the GA's take on "specialized" lines. Personally and IMHO, it smells too much like more of their mind control at the genetic level to preordain one's future to that degree—which when reduced to its LCD appears to simply be more of their genetic slavery. If psychoanalyzed by modern psychologists employed by Beowulf. Son, your mother says I have to hang you. Personally I don't think this is a capital offense. But if I don't hang you, she's gonna hang me and frankly, I'm not the one in trouble. —cthia's father. Incident in ? Axiom of Common Sense |

Another interesting post Louis and I like your solution. Please don't begrudge my humble request that the first leg of the field trip include the coordinates of the Congo System, to have a summit with some slaves. Only Torch's rehabilitated and repurposed slaves may be able to break through that level of "genetic indoctrination."
Which begs the question of whether that level of indoctrination can indeed be breached? Which leads right back to my original thought of what to do with them, if for all intents and purposes they are simply genetic versions of incorrigible and hopelessly indoctrinated Masadans.
