We've debated what will happen to Firebrand when the time limit on his nanos runs out or if he even got the suicide suite of nanos. From the text we're told that the nanos receive a reset signal periodically. Where does this signal come from? After all, some people would have to travel, perhaps extensively and protracted travel that would take them away from Mesa or where-ever home is. How does the MAlign keep from having these travelers keel over in the middle of a conference in Mannerhime?

Additionally, who all received the full suite of nanos, the ones which included the suicide nanos? It seems field agents who were sufficently inside or aware of the onion, such as Firebrand, were supposed to have these nanos. How could agents carry out long field assignments?

Herlander was taken from Mesa all the way to Haven than back out to Manticore before relocating to Bolthole. That happened over a fair bit of time and he's not dead so presumably he doesn't have the suicide nanos.

I mentioned before how I would build it. I would embed the reset in the standard Mesan version of Wifi protocols. As long as a standard Mesan wifi device is around in range, no issue. Take away their phone and put them in a in a box, and 12 hours later, a tiny explosion removes the brain stem. Since any Mesan wifi station, or even phone will send out the protocol, all is good. But prisoner 101 is take away all devices and isolate the prisoner in an area signals cannot get out (or in), so let the standard procedures work for you.

RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships."
