It does appear that the US political system has become so big, so entrenched and so over organised that it is not functioning as intended.
Not sure if Trump is the man to "drain the swamp" as he appears to be more of the same, perhaps worse.
Our having five PMs in five years does indicate that we can hold their family jewels in a vice better.

Apparrently, the 1% are tired of paying off politicians to do their bidding. With trump's (sic] cabinet appointments, now they are the government.

Because, in that case, you recall point #1 incorrectly.
Slavery in the USA was increasing.

The 2nd point, the USA was indeed fighting to defeat the
secessionist rebels, with the end of slavery not a war aim,
but merely a likely and forseeable byproduct.
But that doesn't matter, because the civil war was started
by the Confederate States of America, when they fired on
Fort Sumter, so it is their war aims that matter.
The War Aims of the Confederate States of America were,
first and most important, To Protect Slavery,
and second, to attract some more states,
because they only had seven (7) at the time.

Their First War Aim failed, and Slavery was officially ended,
but that does not change the fact the Protection Of Slavery
was the purpose of the American Civil War.
