Unfortunately Trump has a history of using "the Law" to his advantage even when that usage violates the spirit of the law. He is inherently bent toward violating the law.

And his supporters think it is a sign of his virtue. So basically .. MEH

The people I work for seem to do all right in some notoriously corrupt countries. At this point, we make very sure no one affiliated with us is paying bribes, which has tanked a few product lines. It could all be smoke and mirrors for the regulators but they're spending a lot of money on it.

The GOP is pushing to eliminate independent ethics oversight and place that function under the control of... themselves.

So to be clear, under this proposal Congress will now be in charge of *it's own* ethics oversight.


Take a wild guess why they want that change with Trump coming in and them holding majorities on both houses. (It's not because they're getting all ready to "drain the swamp")

Not unexpected.
The right tends to favour industries self regulating themselves as part if a smaller government.

Of course it's a huge incentive for coruption, which I'm pretty sure the average 6 pack type conservative voter just doesn't see being blinded by "smaller government" talking points.

And smaller government means no national government regulations. Its much easier to bribe or economically blackmail state officials and agencies than federal ones.

Rick Perry is much more likely to sell out the health and welfare of his Texan citizens than Jerry Brown is to sell out californians.

yes indeedy, Boy, elininate Obamacare first, then quietly kill any potential ethics investigations. Trump ol=nly said to pay attention to his priorities.

Apparently their concern is that ethics investigations are being initiated due to someone in the office who supports the Democrats is leaking the fact that an investigation is occurring to the press, the news hits page 1, the later finding that the investigation was unfounded gets buried in the back. The problem appears to be a genuine one but the midnight solution (opposed by just about everyone Republican and Democrat alike not in the house) wasn't the right solution to the problem. The biggest problem is the leaking of confidential information. What they really need to do instead is to fire the guy/gal who keeps doing this (I'm sure they know who it is) and put someone in charge who is draconian on the subject of leaking! Problem solved.

But in this case their personal emotions got ahead of their common sense. Those who were falsely accused were outraged and personally mad. Pesky emotions made them disregard common sense. Those who were guilty sensed an opportunity and went with it.

In the meantime they just gave more ammunition to Trump (whom most of them can't stand). The house has an opportunity but it will fade fast if they don't shoot themselves in the foot. Their best chance is the next 12-18 months. They need to make the most of it.
