They were evil not because they were commies, nazis or fascists, but because they valued their ideologies over any number of lives. |

Yes. From 1952 till 1959, Bautista killed about 20000 peoples. With full support and friendship of USA, of course. Even the opponents of Castro regime admitted, that during his rule, no more than 11000-17000 peoples were killed on Cuba. ------------------------------

Really? How many peoples already died in US useless "wars for freedom and democracy"? How many peoples were killed, maimed or disabled by US actions during Vietnam War? At the very least, several times more than victims of "Castro dictature". So, would you admit that if Castro was monster and scum, than United States of America are much more terrible monter, that killed virtually millions either because of hysterical fear of communism or because though, that freedom and democracy could be installed by external force? I.e. basically that american leaders " valued their ideologies over any number of lives"? ------------------------------

Should we not have fought World War 2? Would the world be a better place if Kim Jong Nutjob Jr. ruled all of Korea, instead of just the north? Should we have sat idle while the communists invaded and conquered Afghanistan?

There are just wars and less just wars. WW2 and Korea were just wars, Iraq 1 was just but Iraq 2 had more to do with the oil, and quite a few US adventures are more to do with feeding the military industrial monster than anything else. The communists did conquer Afghanistan, as had the British before them, but it doesn't stay conquered. After 9/11 the US invaded Iraq which had nothing to do with it or WMD; yet didn't invade the Saudies who did it, or North Korea that did have WMD. |

So you admitted that there is balance of good and bad deeds of every nation. Perfect. Then why you deny Castro of anything good? Shod he idly stay away in 1959, while Batista murdered innocents in thousands, destroyed every single civil right on island (yes, him, not Castro!) and constantly robbed his own peoples for the sake of US corporations? I don't think so. P.S.
Considering that several decades later you were forced to do exactly the same - and because of very tragic reason (11 september 2001) - yes, you should. Thousands of peoples in USA and tens of thousands in Afghanistan might be alive. ------------------------------

At least now we know that long term economic sanctions actually work!
Just because his ideology differs from yours, you demonize him. he witnessed the corrosive effect of "laisse-faire capitalism" on the people of Cuba and took up arms against it. And all the boot lickers of the US corporations fled Cuba for Miami. Now they want to return to Cuba as heroes. Helas, chou, Je m'en fache.

Well, his political ideology probably wasn´t very set in stone in 1959, considering that he went touring USA to rally support, first. It wasn´t until the Cuban mafia and rich refugee´s influence turned USA firmly against him that he went to the Soviets. And he got rid of Batista, a dictator that was worse. The "the road to hell is paved with good intentions" might be suitable for his tombstone. |

Yes. Castro was not a nice leader, but he was a drastically "nicer" leader than Batista that he overthrew. He also worked hard to improve life for Cubans, but with the US embargo, it was pretty much hopeless from the start. |
