Much less effort. You toss them into the wedge they use to rip apart asteroids and the mining system turns it into a collection of hyper purified materials.

Not as easy to do with battle steel as with asteroids.

How do you figure that? A wedge dissassembles anything it encounters, and battle steel might last a nano-second longer than a stony asteroid, but not long enough th say thre was any problem with disassembly.

Battle steel is a carbon composite, you just get a whole lot of pretty pure carbon after the absurd gravity gradients of the wedge rip it into micron sized particles before it gets vaporized and fed into the mass spectrometer.

There's a scene during Honor's time on Hades, when they use the minefield to blow one of the ships in a convoy that arrived. The collateral damage from that was severe, sure - but it was only so bad because the nearest ship had its wedge, sidewalls and particle screens offline and was in a very close parking orbit(<500km).

Bear in mind that a Solarian destroyer is currently slower accelerating than a RMN SD(P). None of their ships can force themselves into energy range(<400,000km), never mind kamikaze range. If the GA operated those ships in front of their fleet, there's more chance of the GA ships colliding with them than they with the enemy.

There simply isn't enough shipyard capability or manpower left to refit those ships with better compensators or any of that remote-automation tech, unless it is diverted from building and supplying a modern navy.

The Grand Alliance possess at least 100 SDs it captured from the Solarian League (Filaretta and Crandall). More, if the less damaged ones are counted.
Obsolete or not, this is a VERY large capital investment in VERY big, still functioning starships with VERY heavy, if obsolete, combat capability.

--------------

As the others have noted with varying levels of courtesy, this subject has been discussed to the point of multiple herds of horses whinnying for mercy.

as in the other (many) threads, IMHO the BC's and SD's are best as a source of refined steel.

The CA's (especially the newer Gladiator class) could prove effective as an anti-piracy "Coast Guard" for either Silecia or Talbot, freeing up the RMN / RHN and GSN ships for active operations.

The former/captured SL ships (CA and below) could also serve in the same capacity for the "liberated" sectors after Michelle has visited them.

Except for a few polities like the Rembrandt trade league, do many of the Talbot Sector systems have the tech base and skills to support and crew "Certified Pre-owned" CA/CL/DD? IIRC, most of the local SDFs are LAC based.

While a huge investment, they could really deter pirates, and due to size be better at absorbing damage from such enemies

And these capital ships are STILL a century out of date, Highly manpower intensive, maintenance hogs. and once you shoot the pitifully small magazines dry, HOW in [expletive deleted] are you going to rearm them? Why train a huge (couple of thousand) officers and enlisted for a one trick pony? and that is after you train the trainers on obsolete garbage...

Sounds like Travis Uriah Long days after completing basic and moving to tech school. And why would you want to face even surplus Solly ships on an equal footing?
Helas,chou, Je m'en fache.
