Some are pretty obvious, like Honor Harrington = Horatio Nelson, Rob S. Pierre = Robespierre, Esther McQueen = Napoleon Bonaparte. Others are more subtle, like I would argue Thomas Theisman = Lafayette https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gilbert_du_Motier,_Marquis_de_Lafayette

Since news surfaced in 2010, the disposition of Capt. Holly Graf - former captain of the U.S.S. Cowpens - is a shoe-in for the pinecone passing Sandra Crandall.

If I am correct in your intent, she wasn't actually considered qualified either, or competent, rather. Here's more that seems to suggest that her blood line can be traced back from Sandra Crandall. Militarycorruption.com has photographic evidence of Captain Graf racing her ship against a destroyer, in defiance of all protocols, risking the lives of both crews. See the sailors hanging over the side going "WTF!?"  "It is crazy for the cruiser COWPENS and destroyer McCAIN to be “drag-racing” like a couple of “hot rods” on the high seas. This “full throttle” contest in the Pacific Ocean came within 300 feet of disaster. Note the crew members on the fantail of DDG 56 looking over in horror at the bow of the 10,000 ton COWPENS, bearing down on them, in what must have seemed like a collision course. It certainly did to everyone on the bridge of the guided-missile cruiser – everyone, that is, but crazed Capt. Holly Graf who refused to allow a “collision alarm” to sound. My ship had drag races with more than two dozen ships. It is only one CO takes them way, way to seriously that they become a problem my ship had drag races with several US ships like Harry W Hill, Princeton, Hoel, Johnston and foreign ships like HMAS Perth and Hobart HMCS Huron and HMS Broadsword . Ships have to regularly make high speed runs as part of their regular work ups and training. The ship will often combine them for 'drag races' for fun and bragging rights. |

Girls just want to have fun? Way back in 1865 ... er ... 1965, we used to surf the bow wake of the Great White Steamship from Long Beach Harbor CA USA going to Avalon Harbor on Catalina Island.
Our mighty dinky was a 12 foot Glaspar outboard motor boat. Forty horsepower engine. The big bow wake was about 6 feet high. Seemed like a Mega Tsunami when 3 feet above the ocean. Fun. |

Looking at this from the other direction, who is the analog for Raymond Spruance? Plucked from obscurity and named to Halsey's command for Midway, he did more than could be reasonably asked as a high commander, winning the battle hands down. So which character relates to Spruance?
