The RDN does have a preview. The devastation Zhastro visited upon Desnair with his aquadron of Cities in HFQ certainly provides a rather broad hint of what the even bigger and more powerful Haarahlds can do just as having three Rotweilers on hand is going to be a discouraging word for the RDN after what one managed to accomplish in the Kaudzu Narrows.

A battle between Dreadnought and three other Rottweillers would be a massacre. If the ICN begins a thorough raiding campaign using the three Rottweilers, the RDN would have to send Dreadnought. Without brown powder and steel shells, there is no hope of piercing the Rottweilers' armour. Even with brown powder the lack of HE means the ICN has to use face hardened steel shot. The RDN couldn't even do that.. Solid shot fired from Dreadnought's guns using black powder will have a MUCH shorter effective range against Howsmynized armour.
Dreadnought will be drawn out to fight and it will crushed in a 3:1 engagement. |

Maybe... but this does assume that the Dohlarans manage to get Dreadnought back into service at all before the ICN manages to close in. At this point that is not a done deal. Don - When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

Ok, THAT would make the coming bombardment even more impressive, eh?
If Sarmouth chooses an Inquisition target well inland and stays out of the port's fort guns' range, that would really emphasize Dohlar's impotance against the Haraald's.

True. Until Dreadnought is ready, the remaining RDN will be truly impotent. |

We are recapitulating/reprising Thiesman-LePic at some level. Just not sure at what level. What will Thirsk jump at if the opportunity presents? There are several potential avenues.

Yeah, exactly right. Theisman/LePic is exactly what we are looking at with religion thown in to make the situation really dicey... Don - When any group seeks political power in God's name, both religion and politics are instantly corrupted.

SNIP
Emphasis mine...
Methinks more "Smart" and less "Creative" Ed. IIRC, all of the loyalist "inventions" have been minor extensions of existing Charisian innovations: - Use of a sling to deliver a grenade. - Development of rockets (OK, I'll grant that putting a bunch of rockets on a cart WAS kind of creative for them). - Development of breechloading rifles. - And others of course... Try as I might, I can't think of any truly creative thing the loyalists have done for themselves. IMHO they've been SMART in some of their adaptations, but I think that the Inquisition will keep them from getting truly "creative" as I think you mean the term. |

Something that would slow down creativity would be that the COGA and its minions are so busy producing stuff that works against the coming campaign season. Secondly they have to get every new idea past the inquisition which agrees to everything, kicking, dragging its feet and screaming the whole time. Finally one of the reasons Charis is good at innovating is that they have created the institutional framework for it which is something that the COGA is adamantly opposed to and which is handicapping the bright minds they have at work trying to stay within shouting distance of Charis. I agree that the mines would be dangerous to the Haarahlds. But I don't believe that we are going to see them in this war. Making mines work would require a level of sophistication that is still beyond the church side. The same is true of steam engines. They do have the description and explanation of the principles, but given their starting point, they don't have the time to bring that to reality.
