i am thinking about treecat speech. obviouesly treecats learned to understand english, equaliy obviouesly they can t use english as their vocal apparatus is incapable of reproducing the sounds of the english language.
sollution is the sign language developed for them to express themselfs.

i have been thinking about that.

how about developing a language for treecats ? a vocal language.

using the english language but transliterating sounds of the english language into sounds treecats can make ?

instead of signs treecat sounds

so it would be the english language as words but the sounds woud be treecat , the = bleek blat

what about that ?

it would work if treecats can produce as little as 2 phenoms, thats sounds

Another solution in search of a problem. For communication with humans-on-the-street, treecats need a sign-language translator; with your idea, they'd need a translator for spoken treecat.

Between 'Cat and Bondmate, there would be little advantage over sign-language, and most pairs will have developed a "personal language" like Twin-speak for time audible communication is useful.

Between 'Cats, even sign is only useful if a cat is injured and Mute, like Nimitz.

A much more useful development would be to teach 'Cats to text.

Just build gloves the cats can wear that turn TSL(treecat sign language) into holographic subtitles in front of them.

Spinoff from "tech they ought to have" thread? I can see Stinker perched on HHs shoulder, iPhone in hand typing out messages that translate to speech. I think James Earl Jones' voice? Or Lurks from branches On Tourville's shoulder typing cough smilies.

Why not just give each 'cat a minicomp with touch screen so they can simply touch the words they want to use in a sentence, followed by a "play" button?

Lol, maybe with a second, SPECIAL, button that causes the device to play "Give me celery!"

We have not had an update in a while but the plan was after teaching the cat sign language was to see if they could learn to read and write. Depending on the outcome of that either the translator glove or a modified micro comp would be developed.

"Play button" -F9 key. "Give me Celery"? Guess its a song on the Manticoran top 40 list? Was thinking of the Strangeloves song "I want Candy, with a slight modification in the lyrics.

As was with the quite practical translator employed by Amy in the movie Congo...

From the couple example we have of the spelling things out they seem to have only a loose grasp of English spelling; so they'd fit in just fine with most texters ;)

Why Jonathan, is that a thinly veiled prediction -- or lack of faith thereof -- of the inability of even Honorverse tech to solve the problems with auto spell check?
