So TOR participates with Amazon on a program where if you buy the Dead Tree version, you can pick up the Kindle version for only $2.99 ( At least in the US ) I did this for HFQ and already have my orders in for ATST

Only in the US as far as I know. Certainly haven't seen it over here in the UK.

I don't do kindle. I use Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 (the more recent update is impossible).

Hopefully I get my ebook the same time everyone else gets their kindle. Of course, if I got mine, say, tomorrow...

I don't know exactly. I ordered the hard cover in February, then ordered the Kindle version in April. I just logged in to my Amazon account and searched for the Kindle version, and it showed $14.99 until I selected it then changed to $2.99. However that may be because I have already purchased it. Supposedly, for any publisher that is participating, for any hardcover you purchased thru Amazon, you can get this deal, but the only 2 I have done are the last 2 Safehold books

PDF is the last format I get unless there isn't any other option. My device is an Android tablet, and my viewer software handles ePub, Mobi, FB2 PDF and a few other things native, and DjVu and CBR/CBZ via plugins. (It does not handle titles with DRM, but I don't get those and don't care.) I prefer ePub, but mostly don't have to care about format.

Adobe Reader is required for ePub format borrowed from my local library. The library adds a time limit that shows up as DRM even if the book is otherwise DRM-free.

Kindle format borrowed from the library is the same, only for Kindle or Kindle Reader App.

For non-DRM e-books the eBook Reader in Calibre is more than adequate for any eBook format I've found.

I'm in NYC, and the NYPL has an app that lets you download and view their offerings. My SO was reading NYPL books on her Nook Tablet., using a 3M app, but that stopped working due to changes on NYPL's end, and the tablet didn't offer the option of installing the NYPL app. I set her up on another Android tablet instead.

The NYPL, and most other library systems, use Overdrive as the eBook source. They buy X number of licenses to the eBook from Overdrive. When you DL the book for viewing, it is actually served by Overdrive, and Overdrive keeps track of the usage. If all available licenses are in use, you'll be told the book isn't available and you need to wait, as you would with a print volume. Overdrive also keeps track of time limits, and when the book reaches the end of the lending period, it will no longer open on your device. The fact that it shows as DRMed is a consequence of how you get it, because there is digital rights management involved.

Amazon bought French eBook publisher Mobipocket back in 2005, and used their Mobi format as the basis of their Kindle offerings. (ePub did not exist at the time.) The Kindle reader app is available for a variety of platforms, and is likely what you use if DRM is in the picture.

For non-DRM e-books the eBook Reader in Calibre is more than adequate for any eBook format I've found.

Assuming you are at the machine on which Calibre is installed, it's dandy. If you are on a mobile device, it's not an option.

I just went through a fairly massive effort here to convert books from other formats to ePub as a convenience for tablet reading. (Mobi converts well. PDF is best left as PDF. Other things are try-and-see.) I have a 32GB microSD card in the tablet where the eBook library lives, but only a subset of my total collection is on the tablet. PDF is a poor format for viewing on a 7" screen, and even some of the ePubs are simply too big and take the next thing to forever to open.
