The traitors should be attainted, i.e their titles, property and wealth confiscated by the crown, as was done with Grand Duke Zebediah, pour encourager les autres. Also so they don't repeat the problems they are currently experiencing with the widow and heir of one of the last lot.

That's basically what Sharleyan has in mind. She wants the same sort of resolution that occurred in Corisande.

The question of precisely what military forces she uses to step on the traitors is less important than what happens next. There must be clear, incontrovertible evidence of treason, available for viewing by all, and they must be tried according to existing law, and found guilty and executed for crimes that are capital offenses under the law.

The Northern Conspiracy in Corisande were guilty of offenses Hector would have taken their heads for under Corisandian law (save that he wouldn't have bothered with details like evidence or trials,) and the fact they were guilty and were being executed for just cause was made blindingly clear to all.

Due process and observance of law are even more important in Chisholm than they were in Corisande, given Chisholm's status as a founder state of the Empire of Charis and Sharleyan's position as Queen of Chisholm as well as Empress of Charis.

Sharleyan's message is intended for more than just other great nobles in Chisholm who feel diminished by becoming part of the Empire. The EoC has a constitution and laws, and and behaves accordingly. Accusations of criminal behavior must be proven in court, and punishment must be what the law specifies.

The longer term effects of this message on the rest of Safehold will be interesting to watch.

Well, yes, Denis, we all get that. However, taking up arms against your liege lady is capital treason in any part of Safehold, I'm pretty sure, so that's not going to be a problem.

The point is the importance of due process, and the notion that even rulers must obey the law and proceed as it specifies. How many other realms will have clear evidence, available for viewing by all, full credence given to evidence provised by the defense, and trial by a mixed panel of nobles, commons, and church members before a verdict is reached?

Hector of Corisande wouldn't have bothered with such details. The fact that Sharleyan did was a shock to Corisandians. Siddar might. But Harchong? Desnair? The Temple Lands?
