There are a few, as shown above. However, none of the feasible roles for them involve being used as active service vessels by the Grand Alliance (whether in frontline service or in some other role), and all proposals that involve rebuilding these ships has to pass one simple test: Is this rebuild going to be more efficient (in terms of manpower spent doing it as opposed to rebuilding Manticoran or Grayson infrastructure) than building whatever it is you want to use these ships for from scratch? Be aware that everything from makeshift freighters, to makeshift hospital ships, to makeshift schools has been proposed and every single one of these proposals has failed the test.

The only solution which has completelypassed the litmus test was one I suggested several years ago- namely strip the usable components out of them.

1) Take the small arms, marine hardware, ammo, shuttles and pinnances and use them to outfit the Talbot Guard or similar formations temporarily (until new Manticorian designs are back in production), or outfit imperial planetary police with small arms as needed. If not needed, give same to emerging polities' new militaries (Like Torch or Meyers)

2) Strip the cutters and sell them to Talbott companies or use them for the repair efforts.

3) Strip out the hospitals , machine shops and electronics shops out of each ship and donate the hospitals to the poorer Talbot planets and use the machine shops in the rebuilding process then sell to 3rd parties.

4) strip out any usable satellities, that could be used as comm sats, traffic sats, or weather sats and use in Talbot or donate to emerging Polities.

5) strip our computers, etc, etc and do the same.

6) etc.

7) slag whatever is left over.

I was actually surprised SoV didn't mention that idea; especially in relating to this quote about the equipment of the Talbott Quadrant Guard

That would have been a nice place to mention outfitting units that hadn't bought from the Sollies with captured SLN marine hardware from Crandall's forces; as a stopgap until sufficient Manticoran arms were available.

Replace/modify the normal shipboard missiles as countermissiles that generate HUGE wedges! Just think, one countermissile wiping out an entire broadside launch!

So was I. Independant of the marine force, there should at least 2-6 thousand small arms (pistols and carbines) plus ammo on each of the 48 SDs captured intact at Spindle. If there was a large Marine force (like on Haven sector SDs), there could be enough arms, eqipment, armor and ammo for a heavy battalion. Even if no weapons were salvaged from the destroyed ships at Spindle or the captured ships from Manticore, the arms to field several hundred thousand troops were available on the captured ships.

There also should have been ~500 shuttles and pinnances captured with Crandall's forces. These would have been invaluable for landing troops at Mesa.

Another item which (if existed) could be launched from a Manty ship.

More than that for small arms. This is a typical small arms allotment for a RW Marine company of 150 personnel.

Rifles 150 + 15-20 spares
Pistols 50-60
LMG 10
MMG 10
HMG 5
Morters 6
A Marine or Army unit will be allocated 3 units of fire. A unit of fire is what the unit can expend in a day's sustained combat. Plus at least 1-2 units of fire for training purposes. The U.S. is never stingy with its allotments of ammo.

To give you an idea on what an ordinary combatant will carry this what the destroyer I served on carried for small arms;

M-14 50
M1911 50
MP-5 10
M60 8
M 2 6

It was a Spruance class destroyer so a crew of 325-350.

Also forgot during Desert Shield/Storm we had 25mm Chain Guns on the midships quarterdeck.

So about 1 weapon for every 3 crewmen, plus crew served weapons. So ~2000 arms on a 6000 man SD (without Marine complement) is an acceptable ratio from modern practice.

Thanks for deciphering the gibberish from my phone - I'd like to say that is not what was on my screen before submitted it.
