Turning to thoughts of Snippet 7, I'm having a lot of fun thinking about what Thirsk is going to say to Maik.

The fun's just getting started! :D

I speculated elsewhere about it.

I think Thirsk is pretty sure Maik is as unhappy as he is about what the Inquisition has been doing (and requiring Thirsk and the RDN to do.) They haven't explicitly discussed it, but Thirsk is well aware he's still alive and in command of the RDN because Maik has been protecting him, and he knows Maik is well aware of how he feels.

He's still a man of honor, and his honor will demand that he tell Maik about the visit. On the other hand, he won't want to put Maik in the line of fire as a result of any actions he might take. Maik protected him, and he'll feel bound to return the favor.

He's likely to tell Maik he had a visit from the infamous Merlin Athrawes, and knew it was Merlin because he met him in in the process of surrendering his sword to Cayleb after the battle off Armageddon Reach. Whether he'll tell Maik his family is safe will depend upon how Maik takes the news he got a visit from Merlin. But he is likely to make clear he'll no longer do Clyntahn's bidding, and that Maik should take measures to protect himself from Clyntahn's unhappiness when he discovers Thirsk is his enemy.

What Maik should do is throw Thirsk to the wolves to protect himself, but I think Thirsk is pretty sure he won't do that. What he will do will be the fun part. If he comes clean to Thirsk about how unhappy he is at what he's been required to do, and that he can no longer obey his vows to the Grand Inquisitor because they conflict with his duty as a priest and to Mother Church, interesting things can happen.

(Maik's tenure in the Inquisition pre-dates Zhaspar Clyntahn's election as Grand Inquisitor. I suspect he's not the only Inquisitor who privately viewed the election of Clyntahn with dismay, but couldn't very well say so. Clyntahn might discover that not all members of the Inquisition are as loyal as he assumes they must be.)

Something here that a lot of people seem to be overlooking:

Schuelerite != inquisitor

I'm not even sure that Intendant = inquisitor, at least not before the 'special' intendants started showing up, and even some of them don't seem to be inquisitors.

1,517 went down with the Titanic.

And hydrogen wasn't involved.

There was quite a lot of hydrogeb involved in that one. About twice as much hydrogen as oxygen I believe.

You're thinking Titanic. fallsfromtrees' post, I think, was referring to the Hindenburg.

the Titanic was sunk by a hidden berg. You, and I earlier misunderstood the question.

I don't think Thirsk will tell Maik about the visit from Merlin, and I absolutely don't think he'll tell Maik his family is still alive. Thirsk is far too good a strategist for that.

I've been wrong before, thanks to the devious nature of our intrepid scribe. We'll see if I am this time, as well.

I agree Thirsk will not reveal his family is alive.
I disagree he will not mention Merlin. If Thirsk decides to separate from the Temple and seek Maik's help, he will mention Merlin. If Maik is even remotely willing to support Thirsk, he is willing to accept Merlin is a seiijin and not a demon. Having a seiijin force his hand may be a good way to get Maik off the dime and actively support reform.
