I was just thinking that the Empire of Charis has rockets coming into production and they have mastery of the ocean.
Why not mount a battery of rockets on one of there out-of-date galleons and use it as a bombardment ship as rockets have been used to break up entrenchments? I believe the British first used them during the War of 1812,at least ,to my best knowledge. |

Not much sence. The opposie side already have some rifled shell guns. I.e. any wooden galleon in range is Big Floating Fire. On smaller units, like gunboats, the rockets could be useful. But the current trend of ICN is "put everything we have into capital ships! Who dare to ask about escorts and coastal and patrol?! He is Clyntahn agent!" ------------------------------

Rockets on ships would not give you many reloads (especially smaller ships) With better shell filler coming on line with (in my opinion) gyroscope based fire control systems you would have much more accuracy from an ironclad shooting shells. Rocket guidance systems are going to be successful until electricity and a more consistent propellant come along.

I would have thought that any wooden ship launching a battery of rockets would turn into a Big Floating Fire long before they hit anything |

No, this could be done. Of course, you need to remove the sails out of danger way before launch, but the deck tube launchers could be used from wooden ships. Of course, the crew should be drilled in fire fighting, and everything on the deck must be covered/soakened with water to protect from ignition in case of accidental detonation. ------------------------------

you are basically trying to create an MTB (but with rockets instead of torps) and that is just not a viable yet. maybe when you've got proper internal combustion engines, but not with sails and not with the admittedly impressive steam engines.

No. You misunderstood. They are trying to create gunboat with shore bombardment rockets. This solutions is perfectly workable (of course, if used from GUNBOAT, not galleon!) ------------------------------

You'd have to figure out how to keep the afterburners on the rockets from torching the galleons...

I suspect that wooden rocket-firing ships are going to be far more trouble than they are worth.
