Congratulations, David. A well earned accomplishment.

RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships."

Hmmm Eric Flint for something in the 1632 series? <Grin>

On a serious note. Congratulations and enjoy the award. The check your publisher sends you for your share of the royalties should already tell you what we think. They vote with ballots, we vote with CASH!

Still, getting awards ain't bad. Enjoy!

And now let me shuffle into this Roman Auriga garb, grab the Laurels and recite the obligatory "Memento homo".

I cut my teeth on the Golden Age of SciFi. And some of the most iconic military SciFi before military SciFi was a genre -

Arcot, Morey and Wade series (Campbell)

Starship Troopers (Heinlein)

Dorsai (Dickson)

Birth of Fire (Pournelle)

The Forever War (Haldeman)

Bill The Galactic Hero and the Deathworld Series (Harrison)

But when I first read On Basilisk Station, my first intro to David's work, I knew I had found something very, very special. No one else, not then and not now, not even Asimov, was able to weave a highly technical and detailed universe story with the nitty gritty personal story of characters whom we came to admire and love.

I've personally read and reread the Honorverse and the Safehold series books countless times, enjoying them every time I read them - and thoroughly enjoying those tasty little tidbits that I missed during the other reads.

And even though I've read them at least a dozen times - the intensity of emotion is still there as Honor sails Fearless into Sirius' missile fire or when she guts Burdette or shoots Summerville between the eyes. Likewise when King Haarahld dies in the arms of Hektor or when Nahrmahn sacrifices himself - there seriously cannot be a dry eye in the readership.

And how many times have all of us chuckled out loud at a particular passage, or out load said "ALL RIGHT!" as the bad guys finally get theirs.

No other author, with possibly the exception of some of Ringo's and Harrison's works, can elicit such an empathic response to fictional characters and events. I am, dare I say we all are, emotionally invested in the events unfolding in your books. A very rare and precious gift.

And for that, you do deserve a moment of gloating...but just a moment...and the moments over...so get back in the chair and get back to typing!!!
