The SL does not need the Mandarins to survive as a political organization. And at least one senior SEM official noted this. The interest of the Mandarins and the SL members are not currently aligned.[/quote]

The League may not need the Mandarins, but the Mandarins definitely need the League. There doesn't seem to be any mechanism to displace the Mandarins without their consent -- or at least connivance of some of the Mandarins -- and it seems unlikely that any will consent to a loss of power and possible prison sentence.

I can't see any scenario that would displace (or dispose of) the Mandarins without replacing them with carbon copies of the current Mandarins. I think League members are going to be more inclined to secede than reform and there are going to be fewer impediments to secession than reform.

To misquote: "There are very few personnel problems that cannot be solved through a suitable application of high explosives."

And in the SL marines and FF, there are many people both skilled and eager to apply it to the League administration problem.

Something I noticed about the 2nd and 3rd chapters of SoV. The planet where the plot takes place (the one with all the polish words) does not appear to be a League world, nor is it under the iron fist of OFS, nor is it a Silsian world. This makes me wonder how it will connect to the larger plot. There are over 1700 settled worlds as of 1918 P.D. (See War of Honor, Chapter One). If this new planet is not a protectorate, nor part of the larger Manticoran sphere of influence then how is it going to connect to the larger conflict between The GA and the MAliegnment?

Its not. I doubt will hear much from those planets in the last book.
Its there to give Firebrand stuff to do and because RFC was visiting Eastern Europe when writing SoV.

I think it was something to do with being a red herring scenario to make the SL think that Manticore was expansionist.

Why would Firebrand be stirring up trouble on a planet that has no ties to the League or Manticore? What possible gain would the MAlignment receive from causing trouble on a world that is not in the zones of interest of either of the players they hope to manipulate into conflict?
