I've worked my way through the book and while there's lots of background and plenty of information I did like (I Don't regret buying it!), I feel pretty let down over all. Does anyone else feel this way?

We've got chapter after chapter of events that we could probably have done with out. All the different worlds that have building rebellions, for instance. Did we really need to see him going to so many worlds? One or two would have been enough for me with a follow up that he hit a dozen, or two dozen worlds. It feels like filler, especially given that we all want to see the main plot advance.

Shadow of Victory feels like a shadow of progress. (Sorry!) I know that I, and many others, enjoy seeing the story develop, the action of combat and the plot advancing. Those things seem distinctly lacking in this book.

Followed Robert Jordan and Terry Goodkind' MM serial wfforts just about this far until I got totally bored with the efforts. Seemed they were in a contest to generate the most titles. And buy the final book when it comes out in April 2018 as that will definitely extend the timeline.

Well, sort of. I could have done without the first 60% of the book for the reasons you state. I'm reasonably happy with the last third though, and it WAS several hundred pages of story.

Honestly, I'm more bummed about the ending. But I'm sure I'm supposed to be bummed. At least it's not as bad as the Yawata Strike! :)

I finished it last night, and was left with the feeling that a certain specific something is coming in the next book -- a rebellion within the "Onion". How that plays into the final plot resolution I am happy to leave in RFC's hands, because I feel like this book was his way of bringing together the various branches of the story. I think he's setting us up for some surprises.

I found the book to be a good read, and I will re-read it a few times. The book provided a lot of the background for several of the previous books, which I found helpful in understanding the overall story line, but it advanced the story line all of about 1 day from the end of "Cauldron of Ghosts". I'm still wondering what happened to the proposed attack on Beowulf that was discussed at the end of "A Rising Thunder".

My thinking is that attack, if attempted, goes pretty much as al-Fanudahi and Teague describes it - a "pouncing on Beowulf - coming straight in across the hyper limit and going flat out for the planet - before any Manty forces at the terminus can intervene?"

The problem? BSDF is in orbit of Beowulf and it becomes the only target this SLN task force can see. So when Mycroft starts firing off Solon-style salvos, the Sollies are forced to immediately flush their pods at the only targets they can see... in orbit of Beowulf, or somewhere between Beowulf and the attacking force.

The SLN task force gets obliterated and their missiles become orphans in the dark, with a planet in the middle of the salvo basket.

With the very best fleet, combat experience and technology in space, they still couldn't stop all of Filareta's missiles - first-generation Cataphracts. The BSDF will be trying to shoot down Flight Two Cataphracts in this scenario.

Unfortunately I can see that happening all easily, munroburton. Hopefully RFC will throw in some surprises for our benefit.

Ok several books ago I came to the conclusion that I really need flip charts to keep all the action in all the books properly synched. alas, I'm far too lazy and disorganized to do that. So, with the [much-beaten-to-death] lack of advancement in the timeline, Did Beowulf and Manticore have the 6 months needed to fully deploy Mycroft, or at least sufficient to stop the SLN attack? I've managed to read only the few chapters posted on Baen'ssite, so forgive my POV.
