From part:

"The inmates of Camp Raichel had been successfully marched deeper into captivity by the Inqusition and their AOG guards. Twenty percent of them had died along the way, but the deathtoll would have been far higher is Dialydd Mab hadn’t"

I assume that should be 'IF' Dialydd Mab hadn't.

Well, it *is* coming from what is basically a "Advance Reader Copy". You know, "unproofed"?

And it's not the only one. For that matter, I think there might have been a few over in the Honvorverse SoV snippets as well.

I'm.. not complaining, or even asking where it came from. I'm simply reporting a correctly spelled word, but the wrong word, in the middle of a paragraph which might be missed... to someone (the author/editor or maybe some sort of junior person with access to fix typos)

I regularly find typos in books I read AFTER publication. This is one of the only places where if I find them, they might get fixed in time.

I'm not quite sure why you seem to be displeased about me reporting a typo?

Because the Author has AN editor to help him catch these things. He does not need 100+ separate editors commenting on extracts from some iteration of the draft document, some of which he or the editor may have already fixed.

I understand the desire to help, but commenting here on typos is very likely irritating to the Author. After all, in order to be useful, the author would have to read all the comments and extract the ones with typos, go do massive checks on his latest version to see if they are still there, and repeat constantly. Its basically a massive time black hole.

In the abstract, with a different process(say self publishing) it might be useful to have fans do the editing for the author. I don't think it works for the process the author has, though.

And yet, we have posts from RFC stating: "I was so busy checking the snippet for formatting that I didn't proof that one sentence intro."
- viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8229&p=231846#p231846 Timestamp: Sat Aug 27, 2016 9:38 am (PST GMT-8) ... direct post links aren't working for me, it always goes to the top of the page... the post I am referencing is aprox 75% down.

That has the implication that he's proofing these snippets as he posts them.

If these posts are truly unhelpful to the author, editor, or any person in charge of correcting the manuscript, then they can ignore it. The topic is clear and concise as to what the topic is. They don't even have to open it and read it to understand its useless to them if that is the case.

Instead, we have people coming in here... bumping the thread up, causing the post count within it to increase and draw more un-needed attention.

Please. Stop replying. Let the post die if typo reports on the forums aren't your thing. I wasn't expecting ANY replies whatsoever, from anyone. Either it would get read and the typo fixed, or it wouldn't.

I'm not displeased. I just noted that there are usually plenty of mistakes in what, for all intents and purposes, is an unproofed part of the manuscript.

It's also much more efficient to work from a complete copy. There you can say 'page so-and-so paragraph such-and-such' and the location of the typo (or whatever) is easy to locate. Here you're working with a snippet, with no idea where in the book it comes from. Even the author may not remember, and have to search.

In the past, one usually just took a paper copy and marked any mistakes/changes with red pencil. Nowdays most of the submissions are electronic, but if you have the right word processing app you could change the color of the questionable content to make it stand out like the red used to do.

I think there might even be an entry in the Baen FAQ on Advanced Reader Copies where someone asks if they should email in any mistakes they find.

That was pretty much my thoughts (re electronic copy//have to search), which is why I included a good chunk of the paragraph to be usable as a search term.

RE: Baen FAQ - Found it:

I found a typo in the eARC! Would it be helpful if I sent you corrections before the final version is released?
The initial segments of the books will typically be un-proofed copy similar to galley copies. That's what we are doing during those three months, proofing and passing copies back and forth for approvals. Please don't send us long lists of corrections.
The final segment release will refresh the entire book with the final proofed copy as sent to the publisher. We still don't guarantee zero mistakes.

It's not 100% clear who they are talking to here.. in 1 sentence they say 'proofing and passing copies back and forth for approvals' (which I take to mean, corrections) .. but then in the next they say they don't want long lists of corrections...

Because THAT'S not confusing at all.

Either way, I gives up. Trying to let this post die now.

I'm just happy that we have all of these snippets.
