So, I personally LOVE to visualize a world in my mind and use the imagination that can run wild with descriptions as vivid as Mr. Weber uses in the Safehold series. Is there anyone else who would enjoy seeing the universe created by him on the big screen along with the host of characters in which we have fallen so in love? I just wanted to get an opinion poll. I doubt it will happen but I know I would buy the heck out of that series as I already have with the books

i dont think any RFC book is good for movie/tv series. Its kind hard fix 500page book in 90 or 120 minutes and its even harder put characters thinking in play when all u can do is dialog and RFC use lot of character thinking in his books.

“Well, that’s hardly his fault,” Merlin replied, slightly surprised by his own almost defensive tone. “He was designed as a fire control system, and the Navy didn’t want its weapons systems to have too much imagination.” |

Dilandu beat me to it. I cant see a 2 hour movie or less doing this series credit or justice. Even a series of 2 hour missions wouldn't cut it. Much, much better both for us as dedicated fans and new comers discovering the story through the series to have a TV series that would last 5-6 seasons. |

I wasn't even thinking television series. I agree completely, if it was to be adapted for some sort of media other than literature, television I think would be great

An animated series would be a good way to go.

I agree with you. You would never get any sort of visual medium able to put over the sheer scope and complexity of the storyline. Merlin is the obvious central character, but he isn't present in any of the sea battles after Armageddon Reef, and although he flits in and out of all the land campaigns in a variety of personas, it's as an agent and commando. In the later story, his main interaction with the other major characters is as a planner – he's seldom if ever involved in any large-scale fighting – and that won't come over well in any visual way. . |

I think that the problem here is that in most cases, movies and TV shows tend to do better when they're focused on a small number of characters, rather than a cast of thousands sort of story. But with perhaps a few exceptions, most of rfc's books tend to favor larger casts. The first HH book might be one of these exceptions, where most of the most critical parts of the story focus on HH and her crew. But as her career progresses, the stories becomes wider in scope. And the other series tend to start right off with stories that have a fairly wide scope.
Even movies of the LotRings trilogy may have looked cast of thousands stories, but I think what made them successful is that Peter Jackson kept the focus of his movies' storytelling on the main core characters in the Fellowship, plus a small handful of others. As for Safehold, I don't see how this is really possible. Oh, maybe the first book is do-able, since the central core of characters tend to see a lot of the action that you'd want to see portrayed. But as we progress through the series, many of the main characters become less and less involved in the actual action, staying more in the political background, so to speak. And this doesn't sound like something that would work out all that well in movies or TV. Anyways, those are my thoughts on the matter. |

No bloody way it can be a movie. The problem with almost any novel is that it just won't fit in a two hour or so film. Way too much has to be left out. There's a reason why an assortment of popular genre films had roots in short stories. Just the first Safehold book would have to be done as a mini-series to even try it. I don't expect it to happen. One of the problems facing SF in movies or TV is that it's expensive to produce. When Joe Straczynski's Babylon 5 was on TV, one reason it got made at all was going purely digital for FX. Earlier effort like Star Trek used miniatures which were far more expensive. And even then, there was the nail biting at the end of each season while everyone waited to see whether the series would be renewed for another season. B5 lasted the planned 5 years, but season 5 was arguably weakest because it looked like there wouldn't be a season 5, and Joe shuffled episodes to tie up main story arcs so that if there wasn't a season 5, the series would still tell a coherent story. David was GoH at a con back in 2005 where he talked about bringing Honor Harrington to the screen, because there was apparently significant enough interest on the part of studios that it might happen. Ten plus years on and nothing, so I have to assume the discussions didn't pan out, and I think Honor Harrington is still a better bet to get on screen than Safehold. _______ Dennis |
