Just because you change the web page to say "delayed" shouldn't mean you don't hurry to make the content available once it's in your hands.

I'd also like to think that they do a somewhat thorough check that the received document is okay. Things like: missing chapters, displaced parts of of wrong books, or accidental inclusion of private communications ^_^

I would imagine they do *some* checking, but by definition an "Advance Reader Copy" is the text *prior* to any proofreading or final editing.

They've had the text in digital format for, what, 4 days now? I don't think it should take all that long to flip through the pages to see if any of those kinds of "glaring errors" are present.

For that matter, I'm not all that sure exactly how much "quality control" publishers actually do. The first paperback copy of one of the Dahak series books I bought was missing about 100 pages. Not out of order, actually missing. It wasn't that they'd somehow fallen out or been removed, the book was in pristine condition. Now, I understand that was probably a glitch in the actual printing and binding operation, since the ebook was fine. But still, I've always wondered if that one copy was unique or whether some significant percentage of the whole run had the same problem.

While most consumers would think a book publisher and a printer are the same business, for most of history (before waves of mergers and consolidation) they were separate businesses. Even today independent publishers exist who contract with book distributers (who quite often are also book publishers) to get the text an author has written and they have edited into book form by the printing company.

Baen is one such publisher, and they contract with Simon and Schuster for distrubiting the text they provide to the printing company into books (dead tree versions only). See Baen FAQ, Book Binding Problems for details.

It's 11 minutes past 9 a.m. EDT on a working monday ... let the e-ARC-waiting-games begin (again)!

The first one to spot the eARC and post it in the forum should get a free copy signed by MWW himself. :D

I really wonder if Baen has any stats on how many more hits they have with this book and people spamming refresh?

I can guarantee Baen is recording the hit rate on their site. Hit rate is one of the prime metrics in any internet based business. It is possible, that boosting their hit rate might be a factor in Baen delaying the book. It is a simple fact that the websites with higher hit rates are far more valuable.

I don't know. Daily uniques might matter but not more than monthly uniques which if your theory is true, would only impart a once in a multi-year spike. Repeat visitors would also spike but any cursory analysis would reveal the reason. This wouldn't suggest a trend. Not valuable enough to purposefully delay a book.

No, I'm pretty sure they're working hard, just not as hard as we'd like and too busy to keep us in the know.

They could be doing for shits and giggles....far more plausible and almost excusable. ;)

I guess Baen pays attention to the forums. They've communicated!!!

Hello,

I’m very sorry for any inconvenience caused by the delay in publishing the eARC and ½ versions of Shadow of Victory. I just want to let you know we’ve received the manuscript and the ebook will be online sometime this afternoon.

Thank you for your patience and support of Baen Books.

Regards,
Jenny Cunningham

It's coming TODAY!!!! Got to get my work done before it arrives.

Is Baen on Eastern time? If so, it's afternoon! It could be here any moment!

It's just short of 2 p.m. EDT ... the afternoon has some hours more.
