i think what most of us don't like is not that it's taking time but the lack of any transparency.

how difficult would it be to send out an email to all purchasers and explain we just received the book and our complicated process takes 6-7 days?

i wouldn't be wondering and checking the baen site every hour.

in any other business, this would be unacceptable. too bad there's only one David Weber.

imagine if MWW didn't keep this site up? we'd be completely in the dark with our @#$% in our hands.

Lets take a poll:

Q: Is everyone who is whining about the EARC, less than 35 years old and known oly the digital age in their life?

No, really, lets take a poll...

Just wondering...

I'm less than 35, but I still think you shouldn't whine about Baen unless you're trying to guilt RFC into giving more snippets.
You know, doing something productive.

And German work law doesn't even stop there - hire and fire like in the US is impossible over here. After a probation period, usually six months, you can only be fired with three months notice (the notice period becomes longer the longer you work for a company). And only for important reasons (managerial whims are none btw). It's insanely hard for a company to get rid of an employee they don't like as long as the employee is not ill behaving and as long as the company is not in deep financial troubles. ;)

I think the USPS has emulated that. Once an employee has been there for six months or so, it's almost impossible to fire them. Which, of course, is probably why our postal service is so [sarcasm] efficient [/sarcasm]. There's not much incentive to work *hard* when everyone can work mediocre and still get paid.

While the USPS is now a 'quasi governmental agency' (i.e. off the books and trying to break even) this description is even more potent in the US Civil Service! I think I read where the involuntary turnover (discharged) is less than 1% per year! The amount of 'protection' that the Civil Service rules have emplaced means that anyone outside of the probation period has to be caught with pictures! Even then the process takes years, at full pay!

I'm from Germany. Over here we're taking things like overwork rather serious. There are draconic punishments incoming for CEOs who even allow their people to work overtime:

- If your contract specifically states that Monday-Friday are your working days you need to be notified early if you are supposed to work on Saturdays - a couple of days is not enough
- You are not allowed AT ALL to work more than ten hours a day
- You have to take a break after six hours
- You're not allowed AT ALL to work on Sundays

:)

Germany and other European countries have much more humane and worker friendly labor laws than America and yet Germany has a strong and prosperous economy. American companies will cheerfully suck the life out of their employees if it adds a penny or two to their bottom line, then lay them off if they miss wall streets estimates. Gotta keep those executive bonuses after all. In Silicon Valley long hours and at least occasional weekends are par for the job but compensation is high as well but that is not so for all US jobs.

Then we'd have the bar, like the "old days"

I have complained about Baen's lack of communications, and I am well over 35 years old.

I'm 43 and again not complaining about the lack of an eARC. I'm complaining about the lack of communication of a purchased eARC complete with contractual obligations to be delivered. Closely related but different for sure. It would be no different if I was promised a dead tree version as well.

This feels like getting scammed on the darknet. Where are my drugs!!! :D :D

I'm 61 and complaining about how long it's taking Baen to get back on track after a delay in meeting prior posted commitments.

Just because you change the web page to say "delayed" shouldn't mean you don't hurry to make the content available once it's in your hands.

I'd also like to think that they do a somewhat thorough check that the received document is okay. Things like: missing chapters, displaced parts of of wrong books, or accidental inclusion of private communications ^_^
