Guys ---
I finished the copy edit on ATST and turned it in Turday night. (Well, actually very, very, very early Friday, but with enough coffee . . . .) There was a delay because of a bad email address n the copy edit file sent to me initially, but I think we squeaked in an eyelash ahead of the drop-dead-deadline. Which means that unless something else goes spectacularly wrong, the book should make its November release. Now, one thing that's likely to happen is that there are going to be some typos in here that got past all of us in the rush to get into prnt. Everyone's doing his or her best to make sure that doesn't happen, but (unlike Merlin and Nimue) we're merely human and (unlike Nahrmahn and Nimue) we don't have high-speed data access. So I'm afraid something can be counted upon to get past us. Nonetheless, Tor is doing an outstanding job to hit their deadline with such a late turn-in, and they deserve much credit for it. By my count, the submission draft runs to 323,000 or so words, which does not include the glossary. Unlike the earlier books, there's no character list in there, either. I was afraid people would hurt themselves picking it up if we included it in this one. Also, because of the rush to production, there will most likely not be time for me to proof the maps before they go to press, so we may see some small errors there. Ideally, in a month or three (once my brain has a chance to settle down), I'll be posting a complete character list for the entire series and a scalable electronic version of the master map here on the site. There are a couple of problems with the map we need to see if we can figure out; some terrain features which are still there aren't there, so to speak, and I have a couple of people trying to figure out what the heck happened. If they can't, I'll have to rework those portions of the map to replace them, and that will mean things will move around at least a little and may affect things like measurements on the micro-scale, but at least it will finally let you play with the (so-far) mapped terrain. Hopefully. All things are, of course, subject to change if the Demon Murphy once more visits my computer system! "Oh, bother!" said Pooh, as Piglet came back from the dead. |

Great news! Thanks for the update. Sounds like a large book. Does anybody happen to know what the word count of HFQ or LAMA were for comparison's sake?

Awesome news! Props to both the Mad Wizard and Tor for making it happen. Already pre-ordered at Amazon.
Do you or Tor care which format (Kindle or Dead Tree) we get? I'll likely wind up with both eventually, but I always order Kindle first. If David gets a bigger cut of the hardback, though, I'll pick it up immediately as well. |

I think it works out pretty much the same either way for David and Tor. I get them in both formats (and got David to sign bookplates I created at a con appearance, because I didn't want to lug a complete set of Safehold hardcovers to the con. David understood. ) But my eBook viewing device is an Android tablet, and I get ePub files by preference. I use an open source eBook viewer that handles ePub and Mobi (Kindle format)files as well as several other eBook formats. _______ Dennis |

I live in walking distance of Tor and know an assortment of their people. (I probably know your editor.) I know a bit about the editorial practice of "tap dancing with Production" that occurs in such cases. Bless you! I was starting to think about extracting the character lists from the electronic versions of the books, straining out duplicates, and placing the result on line somewhere. (If nothing else, to provide a handy reference for the spelling of character's names.) How is the map implemented? I might just commit mayhem to get the Safehold maps into something like Open Street Map...
I think he's busy at the moment with mine. Good thing I dual boot Windows and Linux. Windows 10 has been "New and different BSODs. Collect the whole set!" _______ Dennis |

I see what you mean I sure we forgive you and grant you absolution ahead of time. Reading the intro to the first snippet I thought you had finished ATST on the 12th, my mistake. 300,000 words and 323,000 words within a month - this is going to be a lot of reading time! Thanks. And especially thanks for the promise of the map. The Kindle maps are unusable and the big downloadable MTaT one which I use all the time is getting seriously out of date. Can we have one of those, updated. pretty please? Even if it wasn't quite perfect it would be better than anything else available. Now I have a difficult decision, I like the feel of those nice hardbacks, but the e-books are searchable .... |

Great!!!
I can't wait to see the maps. I really enjoy following the events on the maps as I'm reading them. It's always fun to play general when the armies and navies clash. |
