One would think that that would be where residuals/royalties from prior books would come in, though. There are always newbie readers, which, unless the contracts with the publishers aren't favorable, should at least somewhat replenish the coffers.

I know an assortment of traditionally published writers working in the genre. I think I know two at this point that mostly make their living at it, but one is a former editor who also provides book doctor services and is part time in the wine business (a strong hobby interest she was able to turn pro), and the other has a spouse whose incomes helps fill in the valleys between the peaks. The others have day jobs and write on the side, or have a spouse whose income pays the bills, so income from writing is gravy.

If you're a midlist author, you get an advance for a book, but likely don't see royalties. Royalties happen after the book earns out, and covers the publisher's cost to produce it and the advance you were paid. Most published books don't earn out, and agents try to negotiate contracts to insure that. Since the author is unlikely to see royalties, go for as large an advance as possible.

And if you are trying to do it full time freelance, having a book under contract with an editor waiting for final copy is good, but once that book's done, then what? At the same time you are working on book in progress, you are likely sending out proposals for other books, so there will be more work in the pipeline.

Things are easier for David, because the Honorverse and Safehold books tend to hit the NYT best seller lists these days, so he will see royalties. But David seems to just like to write, and being constantly busy is good.

(The late Isaac Asimov irritated his first wife by taking a typewriter on vacation. He needed to write every day, no matter what. Isaac isn't the only one like that.)

It's sort of darkly funny that Trynair's original motivation for creating the Group of Four has *finally* panned out...but the CoGA has crumbled in the interim, and Trynair is a non-entity rather than leading the anti-Clyntahn faction.

The Go4 origin story (linked in the Safehold FAQ) is a fascinating bit of political maneuvering, even if Clyntahn ends up robbing Trynair blind in OAR.

Not part of Helm Cleaver. Using Helm Cleaver to off Clyntahn. They coordinate to end Clyntahn's excesses. Recall that Rayno is both a true believer and a classic conservative. Meaning he wants to have the Inquisition as the guarantors of orthodoxy and the status quot.

Clyntahn is set to throw out the Writ and irrevocably change Safehold to prosecute the jihad. I doubt Rayno agrees with this even in the slightest.

This is the bit I have real trouble with. I can see Rayno plotting with Trynair to bring down Clyntahn, but him being a part of Helm Clever? No way.

Could happen, but their not going to surrender peacefully the Charis and friends, the Inquisition and Rayno will still be a major power to contend with, and their not going to want to face Charisian nooses, heck the entire Go4 are likely in for the long drop.

My spider-sense tingled onto Rayno after the last series re-read. Your comments sent a similar tingle about Trynair. He is the perfect coordinator to off Clyntahn. Working with both Rayno and Duchairn our good Chancellor is very well placed indeed to blindside Clyntahn.

So, Rayno connects with Helm Cleaver and Trynair. Trynair coordinates with Duchairn. Duchairn coordinates with Major Phandys who organizes the pro Hawerd Wylsyn arm of the guard. Duchairn also coordinates with Magwair. Clyntahn is so focussed on Duchairn, Magwair and the jihad that Trynair has some room to maneuver with Rayno and the Vicars.

Duchairn delivers the popular support of Zion. Magwair delivers the Army. Rayno keeps the Inquisition under control. Trynair gathers the Council of Vicars under wing to bring legitimacy to the transfer of power.

Let's see if my spider-sense is accurate.

Something very wrong...

Explosives, telephone poles from space, remotes - all of that is just not RFC's style - been there, done that...

This has to be gut wrenching, way scary, boogeyman sort of thing - like someone shows up at the prison and EVERYONE is gone. EVERYONE. Without a trace...no blood, no signs of a struggle, nothing, no sounds, no warnings, Bermuda trianglish stuff - brings back memories of the "Ancient Enemy" from Koontz's Phantoms - very scary book on tape!

(OOOPS) - I just looked at the cover of the book again. Sure looks like a full fledged infantry assault on something that could be the prison - complete with rockets and what could be an assault shuttle.

We seem to be attempting to build a coherent story out of the various out of order snippets.

Given the RFC is a master story teller, it should be kept in mind that all of these snippets are unrelated, and only appear to be a story line due to the selection choices of said master story teller.

Not saying that's the case, but.........

And as demonstrated by the Hector snippet from LAMA, and the Thirsk snippet from HFQ, it is clear that RFC in some respects considers us as cat toys.

Assume he is not below Clyntahn's radar. Clyntahn is arguably bug-ass crazy, but not stupid. He hasn't forgotten Trynair, or the fact that Trynair is the one the Grand Vicar listens to, and does what he says. Assume the Inquisition is keeping a sharp eye on Trynair and alert for any hint he might try to act counter to Clyntahn's wishes.

These days, Trynair is basically functioning as a Foreign Secretary, coordinating the efforts of places like Dohlar, Desnair, and Harchong, and terrified that Desnair, for example, might just drop out. Clyntahn being Clyntahn, he might just hold Trynair responsible if that occurred.

My assumption, Dennis, is that Trynair is useless without a coconspirator within the Inquisition. With that proviso Trynair may well be the connection between all of the moving pieces RFC will set in motion in this book.
