Several platforms. But nothing about their distribution in local space.

The text clearly stated that Rakurai platforms are located inside the sphere of defense sattelites. Not sphereS, but single sphere. I.e. they aren't disperced around the planet. I really doubt that Owl could just use wrong words by accident.

Well, that just mean that it can only cover one side of the planet at a time. So you could theoretically use electricity and high tech gadgets to your hearts content if you are below the horizon from the platform.

That also means that it can't fire effectively or at all at oblique angles, ie. targets near the horizon means a very very long slog through atmosphere for the missile.

The system as described is ineffective if all the OBS platforms are huddled inside a sphere of defensive platforms.

Only if you are talking Geosynchronous orbits. A non Geosynchronous polar orbit will cover all of the planet within a fairly short time (depending on how high is the orbit), and there is no texted (to my knowledge) indicating that the OBS has to have immediate response, since it is likely to be used against stationary targets.

I'm a bit confused by the idea of some sort of localized sphere of platforms which would necessarily be very many kilometers in diameter. Any such sphere of platforms would have to be at varying distances from the planet and as such will disperse in short order without some sort of constant, active repositioning. Therefore, I took sphere as a spherical space around the planet.

Around Earth, for example, 2 objects in a circular orbit 1000 km and 1100 km from the surface have orbits that are a bit over 2 minutes different. Even being just 10 km different in altitude leads to needing to correct about 15 seconds per orbit. Basically, a localized sphere is a not very good idea for a long term orbital grouping.

So, a moving target will preclude the OBS from firing then? Another strike on it's effectiveness.

And if it's not in a geosynchronous orbit its immediate coverage shrinks.

The only conclusion I can draw from the textev is that OBS is very badly designed. It should be easy to take out with the resources Merlin has at hand even though OWL says in OAR it's not possible. Since it's solar powered, why not just use bunch of high speed sand casters on the panels? Casters are very easy and cheap to manufacture. I can't see how laser-defenses are going to be able to shoot down grains of sand. Just keep lobbing casters in retrograde orbit compared to the array until it runs out of energy.

It's not just solar powered. It does have a fusion plant.
