The books say most of the BBs are about 1.5 m-tons. Could there have been a prototype under 1 m-tons? I am trying to write an anthology and I need help.
Need to apologize, I don't know how else to get to Duckk or the others, not exactly comp savy. Deathwing, 978 Ktons, PNS, captured at San Martin when it was liberated, sold to Adcock for some additional supplies, he would be using it as he slowly upgraded it, as a test ship. Listed as a DX. Designation X, only the new High Command misread it and thought it was a Destroyer Explorer and sent it out to do explorations above Basilisk, it was supposed to be a five year mission, just one little hitch, they did an ORDMOD and told the skipper the new date to return was 99 years, effectively informing him, since he was the late Duke Summervale's grandson of his banishment/ exile. |

What books are you referring to? Certainly, in the Manticore Ascendant series it is implied that battleships were over a million tons & possibly a million & a half tons. However in House of Steel it clearly states that the Manticore-class battleships; (later the Thorson-class) were based on a Solarian design & built under license & were just under two million tons. In Honor Harrington's Navy: Naval Design and Doctrine, which is the appendix to The Short Victorious War the average displacement of the latest class of battleships for Haven was listed as 4.5 million tons. Any prototype battleship would have been long since scrapped. |

Also be aware that fan fiction isn't allowed on this board; do be careful about posting ideas your thinking of trying to write about.

The designation for an experimental battleship would be BBX. It's hard to conceive of the RMN accidentally mislabelling a million ton vessel as a destroyer(60-100k tons).
Also, exploration vessels are more likely to be based on light cruiser or frigate hulls, since those traditionally have greater fuel-range than destroyers. HMS Harvest Joy is, I think, the only actual example of such in the books. |

A 1900 PD designed BB is defined as 1.5Mtons - ~5 Mtons, in 1500, it may have been as low as 1 Mton, as even BCs were down in the 180Kton range. I'm not certain what the original mass was on the Manticore BBs was - the ~2 Mtons may have reflected one of the many refits they received over their lengthy lifespans. They may have very well started with masses closer to 1Mton - we won't know until Manticore Ascendant gets there. However Jonus Adcock was with the navy in the last 1800s through ~1915 and had no blood relation to Duke Summervale, so I have no idea what the top poster is referring to. ******
RFC said "refitting a Beowulfan SD to Manticoran standards would be just as difficult as refitting a standard SLN SD to those standards. In other words, it would be cheaper and faster to build new ships." |
