Since we have no numbers either way I'm assuming that the drive draws triple the power at full acceleration - not just burns out three times sooner. (Though I did one counter-example below where I assume only twice the power - which actually gives better numbers in this energy limited design).

You're putting much more thought into this than I ever have...
Hey, when you've got a (half baked) spreadsheet of missile acceleration you tend to want to play with it; even when there's no real need.

(One of these days I need to clean it up, lock down all the supporting references, and then put it up on something shareable like google sheets - but I keep spending the time I could work on that reading and posting here instead ;))

Frankly I'm surprised these two catalogue entries haven't drawn more notice than the LDDMs. :?

I think that this is the more reasonable scenario. I can't see any good reason why a missile drive would be so much less efficient at high power that it would burn 3x the energy to do twice the work. In fact, typically power systems are _more_ efficient at high power than medium. OTOH, it's not unusual for energy-storage systems to be less efficient at high discharge rates, so only getting 2/3 the available energy out at high power might be plausible - although, if the rings really do behave more like capacitors than batteries that shouldn't be a major issue.

Over all, I'm more inclined to attribute the difference in run times to component life than power consumption.

Going back to do the counter-example:
If we took that middle profile of high followed by 72s of 1/2 power, but assume the high power drive take only twice the power from the capacitors of the low we could actually run the high power setting for 54 seconds, rather than 36 which would improve the performance to:
54s @96k +072s @46k = 6.0mkm.

But again, we've no evidence that there's extra power left after a high power capacitor missile burns out its drive ring.

Probably because we haven't been able to get our eyes sufficiently unrolled ;)

But, since you asked: I really don't think that pirate-hunting is a sufficient driver for ship design to make a specific class plausible. The cruiser, meanwhile, is pretty middle-of-the-road.

I think some power would have to be reserved for ECM and pen-aids, too. I have no idea how that fits in the power budget of ERM amd LERM missiles or how it should be managed in a hypothetical LDDM.

I'm just surprised that people haven't jumped on me about, "RFC said no frigates" or "SLN designs are crap."

Most of 'em are still taking advantage of the opportunity to inspect the back of their eye sockets.

A frigate type ship might be useful for sale.

Depending how tightly you define frigate.

A few years ago here we messed with the concept that hyper capable ships are power projectors, while non hyper capable aren't so much. Especially for a system that has a larger than normal hyper limit.
But I think the concept of a non hyper capable cruiser or heavier never really came up much.

That is another concept I'd look at. Selling non hyper capable cruisers, maybe even BC's, as heavy system defence to systems that don't want to project power like that for whatever reason.

If somebody wanted to custom order cruisers without Hyper-generators, I'd certainly consider building them; especially if they paid a significant down payment or cash in advance.

I don't think I'd spend much time or money designing or advertising one without a firm order.

Cohort

DDS (small)

75000 tons

Broadside
SD Scale Laser in each broadside
Flanked by DD Scale Lasers

12 PD
18 CM

Chase
SD Scale Laser
6 PD

The Cohort is a Small Escort and Customs patrol Ship.

Crew size using GA Tech Limited to less than 50
Carries 50 Marines and up to 50 dedicated prize crew or 100 Marines

No long range missiles nor attack capability outside the Lasers and a Viper CM option.

It is similar to a LAC but carries its own hyper generators and can accompany Freighters and civilian Transports into hostile territories.

More than a Frigate or LAC it is made for customs patrols and on rare occasions Special Forces actions, such as slave rescue.

Carries shuttle sufficient to move all the Marines / prize crew in one action.

Has enough defensive ability to fend off pirates

Fast enough to give chase of Any Civilian or small fast pirate ship. GA latest tech GA only
