We've just had our federal election. Probably won't know the final result until late in the week.
Mainly losers rather than winners. The biggest loser was the current (but for how long) conservative government with a massive home goal. It is going down to a coin toss as to who (between the conservatives and Labor) will win government by negotiating with independents to get across the line. Then they will have to deal with an unaligned Senate. Lots of minor groups are getting one or two up. These come from all philosophies. Once again the hard right people who claim to speak for the "Silent Majority" discover that it is about 5%, not a majority. |

I suppose I could open carry my .22mag revolver. I also have my CCP so I could just stick it down my pants. I could also carry some amount of marijuana in my pocket. Oh yeah and the 30round magazines for the assault rifle. Of course, I do NOT do these things here in Oregon that would get me arrestd in CA ... but I could. I could also get enough pills from my doctor to off myself (with qualifications) register to vote at the DMV. All ballots are mail in, we don't need no stinkin' voting lines and valid voter ID cards here in Oregon. Still plan to Go to CA for Thanksgiving and haul the guns, even the CA illegal 30 round mags. We go shooting at the range with the brother-in-law and his cop friends. Helas, chou, Je m'en fache.

Do you mean secede? I wouldn't worry about it. After any major change there are always extremists who push a simple (but flawed) answer to a complex question. |

Yeah I meant secede... Not that I would want that to happen... But some of these die hard liberals do talk trash that way; and if California did who do you think will pick up the tab for all those on Social Security and other hand-outs that the Feds give out... just those poor smucks who stay in that new country with higher taxes...
It will never happen but the liberals do talk... |

Remind me, how many conservative types have, over the years, talked about seceding from the union? |

We have a similar issue in the UK with Scotland and the SNP. The SNP wants Scotland to be an independent nation, but their sums just don't add up, especially with the recent(ish) drop in oil revenue. Should they go independent without seriously cutting back on their Government spending, the resulting economic collapse would make Greece look like it was merely low on spendables. The problem with Secession is what happens when the flow of money from the rest of the country is cut off? Scotland relies on the rest of the UK via the Barnett Formula which gives it about £1,500 more per head than England. Should that be cut off and Scotland forced to rely on internal taxes... ouch. Does Caliornia have a similar issue? ~~~~~~

The difference is that California is a net payroll supplier for the federal government. If they secede the trillions in debt grows and with a smaller tax base the huge interest costs on those debts becomes the sum and parcel of all federal revenue. I.e. the US goes bankrupt without California. Texas also has a huge tax base, but it is not as far on the net tax provider side and wouldn't drag the remaining country down if it left. New York has as large a tax base, but is a net receiver of tax money, encourage them to secede. Most red states couldn't afford even basic government without those three large tax bases to loot and pillage. They talk as if minimum government is what they want, but without the generosity of the big blue states they would swim in red ink and the defense department would have to go back to relying on militias, and becoming dependent on NATO and SEATO to help support it. |

There was a book published some 50 or so years ago about a massive earthquake the caused great portions of Califoria to drop into the ocean. The central valley became a large inland sea, Los Angeles basin, San Francisco, San Diego were gone and underwater.
Yeah it was a diaster story but it mainly focused on the economic impact on the United States losing the wealth, farm products, and other products that California provided to the US and the rest of the world. It was a good book, dated now; I think it was called: "The Once Great State of California" or something along those lines. Anyway no way will California leave the Union... just trash talk. I would rather see California split into two possibly three states due one area LA or San Francisco controlling the future of the rest of the state. |
